From an American Blog: Prevent War against Iran: Boycott Shell Oil

I hate boycotts. Invariably innocent people suffer. This is a special case though. A boycott of Shell can help us prevent war against Iran. Vital Perspective explains why:

Shell announced that it has entered, with a Spanish oil company, Repsol, into a preliminary understanding to help the Iranian regime develop part of its vast South Pars natural gas reserve. This means a $10 billion investment in Iran. It also means a slap in the face to all of us who are working to undermine the genocidal regime in Tehran. If Shell decides to go forward with the deal the Mullahs will get a shot in the arm that will only embolden them. Sadly, this comes at a time that the Iranian energy sector seems to be on the verge of collapse. Iran’s oil minister Kazem Vaziri-Mamaneh has confirmed recently that the state’s oil industry is suffering from an acute lack of investment.

Wouldn’t it be nice to know that you can do something to prevent a war?

While we are on the subject of Iran… Did you hear that Russia and Iran are setting up a gas cartel? Europe will be 100% dependent on Major Putin and Dr Ahmadinejad. France would be the only exception thanks to their nuclear power. Doubt it will change Europe’s behaviour on the international arena though. Not because the EU has a backbone, but because they are useless in any case, with the exception of Britain.

Check out all these countries that sent their troops to Afghanistan to fight Taliban and Al-Qaeda… All but Canada and the US wouldn’t even let their troops go into “dangerous” areas.

I agree with the sentiment, but even a mass Shell boycott would be ineffective.

In short, oil is a commodity with a world price. So, if you instead buy oil from BP, then you just (very slightly) drove up the price of world oil — and Shell will be unaffected because they will sell their product to someone else at a slightly higher price.

You can read more about oil economics here.

bonehead,

Good point – I have no doubt that someone will buy their oil. However their petrol stations in North America could be hit, resulting in loss of profit. Customers do matter.

Additional option is to boycott their shares and invest in terror-free funds as recommended by Vital Perspective.
