Shell on Trial as Court Weighs Its Climate Responsibility

FINANCIAL POST

Shell on Trial as Court Weighs Its Climate Responsibility

Bloomberg News: Hugo Miller and Laura Hurst: Publishing date May 25, 2021   (Bloomberg) — A Dutch court verdict against Royal Dutch Shell Plc will determine whether it has a legal responsibility for climate change, in a case that will be watched by Big Oil executives globally.A panel of judges in a lower court in The Hague will rule on Wednesday in a case being followed closely by environmental campaigners too. While the verdict is only legally binding in the Netherlands, it’s set to be scrutinized as a new area of litigation and may guide deliberations by judges elsewhere.

Shell was sued by Milieudefensie, the Dutch arm of Friends of the Earth, whose lawyers spent two weeks in court earlier this year arguing that the company is violating human rights by extracting fossil fuels and undermining the Paris Agreement’s aim of limiting temperature increases to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Mexico to buy Shell share of Texas refinery for $600 million

MAY 24, 2021: MEXICO CITY — Mexico said Monday it will buy Shell’s 50% share in the jointly owned Deer Park refinery near Houston for about $600 million.

The move comes as part of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s central policy to build, acquire or renovate oil refineries, in an era when most countries are trying to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.

“We are going to stop buying fuel abroad … we will become self sufficient by 2023,” said López Obrador, who is spending about $9 billion to build a similar-size new refinery in his home state of Tabasco. read more

Shell wins $2.5 billion Australian power contract with battery storage

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) state said on Tuesday it has awarded a A$3.2 billion ($2.5 billion) 10-year power supply contract to Royal Dutch Shell PLC, which includes supplying battery back-up power for wind and solar energy.

Under a deal with Edify, Shell has contracted to take 60% of the battery’s power.

“This long-term services agreement is a model for how large energy users can access dispatchable power like battery storage, which complements renewables,” Shell Energy Chief Executive Greg Joiner said in a statement.

Shell faces Dutch court ruling on global emissions

By Ed Reed: 24 May 2021

A court in The Hague will rule on May 26 on a climate case against Shell, led by Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie).

The environmentalist case demands that Shell cut CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030. Success for the NGO would see the corporation ordered to “reduce its emissions in line with global climate goals”.

The outcome, it said, should “impact climate policy and corporate accountability globally”. It does not seek compensation, rather a change to Shell’s business plan. read more

Oil Majors Look to Fill Businesses’ Growing Appetite for Green Power

By Sarah McFarlane: May 24, 2021 7:00 am ET

Businesses are buying more renewable power, and oil majors want a piece of the action.

European oil companies including BP PLC and Royal Dutch Shell PLC are building new wind and solar projects and striking deals to supply electricity to big corporate buyers like Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp., treading into the domain of traditional power companies.

Oil companies say securing long-term deals to supply electricity will provide a new source of income and underpin their expansion into wind and solar power as they seek to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and prepare for a lower-carbon economy. read more

Influential investor joins shareholder rebellion over Shell’s climate plan

Legal & General Investment Management, Britain’s biggest fund manager, piles pressure on oil firm

Rupert Jones and Hilary Osborne: Mon 24 May 2021 06.00 BST Britain’s biggest fund manager has piled pressure on Shell after joining a shareholder rebellion over the oil company’s carbon-cutting plans, saying that they lack credibility and the ambition required to combat global heating.

It has emerged that Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM), one of the oldest fund managers in the City of London, was among investors behind a significant shareholder vote against Shell’s climate transition targets at the company’s annual meeting on Tuesday.

The asset manager, which is part of the insurer Legal & General and manages more than £1.2tn of assets, told the Guardian that it joined activists demanding faster progress because it did not believe the Anglo-Dutch company’s plan was credible. read more
