Shell has elevated Qatar to the status of a region in its new corporate structure.

Qatar Shell now ranks alongside Europe, Africa, the rest of the Middle East and North Africa, and Asia-Pacific as a regional division. The only other Shell country organisation that has regional division status on its own is Australia.

Andy Brown becomes executive vice-president of Qatar Shell, reporting directly to Malcolm Brinded, executive director (Upstream International). Brown will be responsible for all Shell activities in Qatar.

Shell is constructing two of the largest energy projects in the world with Qatar Petroleum in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Pearl Gas to Liquids (GTL) is the largest energy project ever launched in Qatar. It will be the world’s largest GTL plant and will cement Qatar’s place as the GTL capital of the world.

Qatar Petroleum and Shell (30%) are together building the Qatargas 4 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project combining Shell’s global leadership in LNG with Qatar’s vision to become the world’s largest LNG supplier.

Brown has been working on Qatar projects for Shell since 2002. He has been based in Qatar as managing director of Pearl GTL since 2004 and was appointed country chairman for Qatar Shell in 2005. Over this time Shell has grown its presence from zero to over 1,000 Shell staff in country.

Sheikh Thani bin Thamer al-Thani remains Brown’s deputy in Qatar Shell.

Brown said, “Shell is investing more in Qatar than in any other country. The increased focus on Qatar within the Shell Group reflects the size of our projects here and the importance we place on our relationships with our partners here.

“We are proud that Qatar has chosen Shell to work on these projects and intend to repay that trust.”

In addition to Pearl GTL and Qatargas 4, Shell has been appointed by Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat) as shipping and maritime services provider for one of the most significant fleets in the global LNG business.

Shell also has a strategic partnership with Qatar Petroleum International (QPI) to work together on projects around the world throughout the energy value chain.

Shell and Qatar Petroleum International are working together to assess the feasibility of jointly building a refinery and petrochemical manufacturing complex in China.

Shell was the first anchor tenant to establish a presence at the Qatar Science & Technology Park. A 35-member team is now busy working on technology projects at the Qatar Shell Research & Technology Centre.
