Shell to Appeal Dutch Court Ruling on Emissions Cuts

Shell to Appeal Dutch Court Ruling on Emissions Cuts

By Sarah McFarlane: July 20, 2021 8:24 am ET

Royal Dutch Shell PLC on Tuesday confirmed it would appeal against a Dutch court ruling calling for the oil major to reduce its carbon emissions at a faster pace, saying it was being unfairly singled out.

The energy giant said it was working toward increasing the scale and speed of its plans for cutting carbon emissions, but that the court ruling didn’t take into account the commitments it set out earlier this year to shift away from fossil fuels toward lower-carbon energy due to the timing of the hearings. read more

Shell To Appeal Court Ruling In Netherlands Climate Case

RTTNews: Jul. 20, 2021, 07:48 AM

(RTTNews) – Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDS-B, RDSB.L, RDSA.L, RDS-A) confirmed that it will appeal a ruling issued by the District Court in The Hague, in May 2021, that Shell must reduce its global net carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels.

Shell said it agrees urgent action is needed and it will accelerate its transition to net zero emissions by 2050. But it will appeal because a court judgment, against a single company, is not effective. Climate change is a challenge that requires both urgent action and an approach that is global, collaborative and encourages coordination between all parties. read more

Chris McGreal: Mon 19 Jul 2021 11.00 BST

When Royal Dutch Shell published its annual environmental report in April, it boasted that it was investing heavily in renewable energy. The oil giant committed to installing hundreds of thousands of charging stations for electric vehicles around the world to help offset the harm caused by burning fossil fuels.

On the same day, Shell issued a separate report revealing that its single largest donation to political lobby groups last year was made to the American Petroleum Institute, one of the US’s most powerful trade organizations, which drives the oil industry’s relationship with Congress. read more

Shell proposes large-scale CCS facility in Alberta

Shell proposes large-scale CCS facility in Alberta

Tuesday, July 13, 2021, 12 AM MDT

CALGARY, AB, July 13, 2021 /CNW/ – Today, Shell announced a proposal to build a large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at its Scotford Complex near Edmonton. This would be a key step in transforming Scotford into one of five energy and chemicals parks for Shell around the world, providing customers with lower-carbon fuels and products into the future, such as hydrogen.

The proposed Polaris CCS project, the largest in a series of low-carbon opportunities Shell is exploring at Scotford, would capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the Shell-owned Scotford refinery and chemicals plant. The initial phase is expected to start operations around the middle of the decade, subject to a final investment decision by Shell expected in 2023. Polaris would have storage capacity of about 300 million tonnes of CO2 over the life of the project. read more
