Pension Funds Get Memo: Ditch Oil & Gas

Shell is basically the tobacco industry of the energy world – they might as well be selling cigarettes. Their job? Keep the oil and gas flowing, consequences be damned.

Posted by John Donovan; 1 December 2023

In a plot twist that could be straight out of a Hollywood eco-thriller, pension schemes are being told to wake up and smell the carbon emissions. At the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association’s ESG conference in London, the big talk was about ditching those oh-so-yesterday oil and gas investments. Because, you know, investing in the destruction of our planet is so 20th century.

Enter Tony Burdon, the chief of Make My Money Matter (MMMM), who’s been rallying the troops to write angry letters to their pension schemes. His message? If those fossil fuel fanboys at BP and Shell don’t clean up their act, it’s time to take our money and run. Oh, and he’s got Olivia Coleman from “The Crown” on board, because nothing says serious environmental policy like celebrity endorsements. read more

Shell Plays Hot Potato with Household Energy Biz, Tosses It to Octopus in the Great British Energy Shuffle

Posted by John Donovan: 1 December 2023

In a move that screams “not it!”, Shell, the oil giant, has handed off its UK household energy and gas electricity business to Octopus, because why handle something tricky when you can just pass it along? Octopus, seemingly thrilled to catch what Shell tossed aside, is now Britain’s second-biggest energy supplier, hot on the heels of Centrica-owned British Gas.

Greg Jackson, the head honcho at Octopus, which began as a plucky underdog in 2015, is probably doing a victory dance right now. His company is about to inherit 1.3 million Shell Energy customers, boosting its total customer count to a whopping 6.6 million. That’s a lot of bills! read more

Shell Plays the Villain Again, Slapping Greenpeace with a lawsuit

Posted by John Donovan: 30 November 2023

In an Oscar-worthy performance of environmental destruction, Shell, the notorious eco-villain, once again finds itself in the spotlight as Greenpeace activists, the caped crusaders of climate justice, stage a dramatic blockade. Picture this: a fleet of kayaks, more formidable than warships, halting the operations of Shell’s import terminal in Batangas City. It’s like a scene straight out of an eco-thriller, except the stakes are real, and the planet’s future hangs in the balance. read more

Shell’s ‘Oops, We Did It Again’ Moment: Second Fine for Playing Fast and Loose with Customer Charges

This fine is a follow-up to their previous accolade of a £1.4 million fine by Ofcom. Shell is really racking up the awards this season!

Posted by John Donovan: 29 November 2023

In a surprising twist that no one saw coming, Shell, the epitome of corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship, has been caught yet again with its hand in the proverbial cookie jar. This time, their subsidiary Hudson Energy Supply (HES) has been bestowed with the high honour of a £1.6 million fine by Ofgem, for what is delicately termed as ‘serious overcharging’. This fine is a follow-up to their previous accolade of a £1.4 million fine by Ofcom. Shell is really racking up the awards this season! read more

Oil Titans on Trial: Big Energy Companies Grapple with Climate Deception Lawsuit in California Showdown

Grab your popcorn, folks. This legal drama is about to reveal whether these energy companies are just misunderstood giants or masterminds of eco-deception. Stay tuned!

27 November 2023

Well, well, well, if it isn’t our favorite energy giants back in the spotlight, but this time they’re not drilling oil – they’re drilling themselves into a bit of a legal quagmire. BP PLC, Chevron Corp., ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobil Corp., and Royal Dutch Shell PLC are about to play a high-stakes game of courtroom chess in sunny California. And guess what? It’s not about who struck oil, but who played a little too fast and loose with the truth about climate change. read more

Shell’s Floating Marvel, Prelude LNG, Set to Make a Splashy Comeback Amidst Winter Demand Surge

There was talk of shutting down Prelude for a year to fix issues, but Shell opted for a shorter maintenance stint. There was a fire, a trade union dispute, a shutdown, a cyclone season – it’s like Mother Nature herself was questioning the wisdom of this floating giant.

Posted by John Donovan: 27 November 2023

Ah, the ever-so-grandiose Shell is at it again with their floating behemoth, the Prelude LNG facility. After what feels like an eternity of tinkering, adjusting, and possibly duct-taping, Shell is almost ready to flaunt this colossal floaty once more. Set adrift 300 miles off the West Coast of Australia (probably to keep it away from any prying eyes), Prelude is more than just a giant on the waves; it’s a floating testament to Shell’s love for big, expensive toys. read more

Shell in Hot Water: UK High Court Greenlights Nigerian Fishermen’s Rights Case

The judge even called the pollution in the Niger Delta “catastrophically environmentally damaging”.

Posted By John Donovan: 23 November 2023

In a twist that’s sure to have Shell squirming, the UK High Court just ruled that Nigerian fishermen can indeed bring their human rights claims against Shell PLC to court. They’re accusing Shell of violating their right to a clean environment under Nigerian constitutional law. Yep, it’s getting real.

13,000 Fishermen Casting Their Net for Justice

The court’s decision means 13,000 fishermen from the Ogale and Bille communities in the Niger Delta are gearing up to sue. Leigh Day, their legal squad, is all set to go to bat for them. read more

Shell Energy’s ‘Forgetful’ Faux Pas Costs Them a Pretty Penny

Posted by John Donovan: 21 November 2023

In a classic case of ‘Oh, did we forget to mention that?’, Shell Energy has been slapped with a £1.4 million fine for a bit of a boo-boo. They didn’t quite get around to telling over 70,000 customers that their phone and broadband contracts were ending. And that’s not all – they also forgot to fill them in on potentially better deals. Whoops!

Ofcom Says ‘No-No’ to Shell’s Go-Slow on Contract Alerts

Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator and not one to let things slide, found Shell playing fast and loose with rules meant to keep customers in the know. These 2020 rules are like your nagging friend who reminds you about your gym membership renewal – they’re there to make sure you don’t miss out on better offers. read more

Shell pays net U.K. taxes for first time in four years

Posted by John Donovan: 21 November 2023

In a plot twist that would make Charles Dickens do a double take, Shell PLC, the bigwig of Big Oil, has actually paid UK corporate taxes for the first time since… well, since they started telling us about it four years ago. Thanks to a windfall levy (think of it as a ‘surprise, you’re rich!’ tax), Shell had to part with a whopping US$40.5 million. Let’s put that in perspective: It’s like a billionaire finding a tenner in their coat pocket. read more

Shell’s ‘Innocent’ Victory: Lawsuits Magically Disappear in Nigerian Oil Field Saga

And just in case anyone named in this saga of righteousness finds any factual inaccuracies, they’re warmly invited to point them out for correction. Because, after all, we wouldn’t want to tarnish the impeccable reputation of these paragons of corporate integrity, would we?

Posted by John Donovan: 17 November 2023

In a stunning twist of fate that’s sure to leave environmentalists and anti-corruption advocates reeling, Nigeria has decided to just give up on its pesky lawsuits against the ever-so-virtuous Shell Plc over some trivial corruption allegations in a decade-old oil field deal. It’s like watching a thrilling courtroom drama, but the good guys (obviously Shell and friends) win in the end without breaking a sweat.

The Nigerian Ministry of Justice, in a move that’s totally not suspicious at all, has gracefully bowed out of civil proceedings related to an oil block, OPL 245, before Italy’s highest court. A Shell spokesperson, probably struggling to contain their glee, confirmed this delightful turn of events. Shell’s partner, Eni SpA, also chimed in, confirming they received a letter from the government stating the claims would be withdrawn “unconditionally” by Friday. “We are pleased that this claim has been withdrawn,” said the Shell spokesperson, in what must be the understatement of the century. read more

Happy Birthday, Shell Cracker Plant! Beaver County Wishes for a Less Polluted Future

Posted by John Donovan: 16 November 2023

Beaver County’s Shell cracker plant just celebrated its first birthday, and boy, did it get some gifts! A whopping 13 notices of violation and at least 26 malfunctions. It’s like the plant’s trying to set a new high score in the environmental harm game. The local community marked this “special” occasion by reminding everyone that Shell might not be the best neighbour.

Anaïs Peterson of Earthworks dropped some fun facts at the party: a nine-day benzene release and a 65-hour carbon monoxide emission event. Talk about party favours! And the guests of honour? Residents like Skyler Brimmeier, who can smell Shell’s operations before they even see their house, and others who have moved out because the Shell party just never ends.

But don’t worry, Shell’s been a good sport, doling out $10 million in fines for their environmental oopsies. Daniel Rossi-Keen of RiverWise gave a heartfelt toast, pointing out that good neighbours don’t typically pollute your air, water, and soil. Shell, however, reassured everyone that safety is their “top priority.” They’re probably just working on a different definition of safety than the rest of us. read more

Shell Plays Climate Roulette, Courts Give ‘Thumbs Up’

In a world where even the courts seem to be looking the other way, Shell continues its merry dance, spewing emissions while promising a greener tomorrow. Will they ever be held accountable? Don’t hold your breath – unless you’re near one of their refineries, that is.

Posted by John Donovan: 15 November 2023

In what reads like a plot from a dystopian novel, Shell, the poster child for ‘do as I say, not as I do’, has just wriggled out of a groundbreaking lawsuit. The Court of Appeal, in a move that screams “business as usual,” refused to hear ClientEarth’s lawsuit against Shell’s Board of Directors. This legal battle was a first-of-its-kind attempt to make directors pay for climate risk mismanagement. Talk about a missed chance to make corporate bigwigs sweat! read more

I work from home and the internet drops out constantly several times per hour. The bandwidth also isn’t good enough to stream a video in 360 for more than ten mins. I feel like I am back on dial up in the dark ages!

What an awful company, switched provider to BT and still being charged by Shell even though they know they are not providing a service, typical oil company should never have been allowed into the telecomms sector or any sector for that matter they have done enough damage to the planet, crash and burn suckers!

All I can say is we’ve been counting the months until we can go with another ISP. For a multi-billion pound company, the functionality of the website is deplorable. I can’t ever view my bills, important links on the website don’t function. It’s actually shocking how bad Shell are as an ISP. read more

40 calls and 12 hours of my life I will never get back

The content below is sourced from current verifiable customer reviews of Shell Energy published on Trustpilot

(Examples posted 11 November 2023 by John Donovan)

CHASED ME FOR NEIGHBOUR’S £4400

For 2 months Shell Energy sent me postal demands for nearly £4,400 for
a neighbour’s electricity supply based on the fact that I lived in the same postcode. I spent over 12 hours on the phone over 2 months explaining their error time and time and time again but not one call handler grasped the fact that Shell did not have a full supply address – they had sent letters to all householders living in the same postcode asking for payment. Appalling service, extremely rude staff, some of whom appeared not to have the foggiest idea what they were doing. Worst service I have received on my life! read more

Shell Plays the ‘Cool Uncle’ Card: Luring Gen Z with Games and Influencers While Glossing Over Fossil Fuels

Shell, the ever-so-clever fox, asserts that their ad blitz is all about showcasing their role in both traditional fuels and renewables. After all, who wouldn’t want to know about the great things a fossil fuel giant is doing in the age of climate crisis?

Posted by John Donovan: 10 November 2023

In an epic display of keeping up with the kids, Shell, the oil and gas behemoth, is donning its hippest hat to woo the young’uns. What better way to endear oneself to a generation terrified of climate change than by hopping onto Instagram, gaming platforms, and influencer bandwagons?

“I am fuelled by the ocean,” proclaims Sage Erickson, a champion surfer with 310,000 Instagram disciples, in a Shell-backed video. She talks about instilling noble values in the youth, while artfully side-stepping any mention of Shell or its fossil fuel-centric agenda. read more

US Supreme Court Snubs Shell’s ‘Timeout’ Request in Coastal Caper

Posted by John Donovan: 9 November 2023

In the latest episode of ‘Oil Titans vs. The World’, the US Supreme Court, in its majestic indifference, has denied a pause to the legal theatrics of BP Plc and Shell Plc units. These plucky underdogs were just asking for a little breather before a Louisiana trial that could see them forking over billions for their alleged role in a coastal vanishing act.

It seems that the companies, in a display of courtroom gymnastics, tried to vault the case out of Cameron Parish, arguing that a fair trial there would be as elusive as an honest emissions report. Their plea? That every local juror is too personally and financially intertwined in the coastal loss saga to judge the case without bias. The audacity of the community for being affected by the issue at hand! read more
