London: Shell has become embroiled in a major row with the World Bank and green energy companies after allegations that it is unfairly refusing to honour warranties on solar power systems sold to the developing world.
Politicians will put the focus on biofuels
…companies such as BP and Royal Dutch Shell, which have bailed out of some unproductive renewable energy sources, are directing most of their environmental attention towards next-generation biofuels designed to alleviate these problems. Shell, for example, is experimenting with cellulosic ethanol made from plant waste such as straw and wood chips and biodiesel made from algae, which can be grown in the sea. However, technologically advanced versions are unlikely to be widespread for another 10 years at least.

In June, the company agreed to pay $15.5 million to settle a lawsuit that alleged complicity in murder, torture and other human rights abuses by Nigeria’s former military government. In 1995, the Nigerian activist Ken Saro-Wiwawas was hanged by Nigeria’s military regime after protesting Shell’s environmental practices, including gas flaring and the destruction of mangroves to make way for pipelines.
