Greek Militant Group Claims Responsibility For Attacks On Police

(RTTNews) –  A leftist militant group in Greece has claimed responsibility for a couple of attacks on the country’s police force, including the shooting and injuring of a police officer last week and the shooting on a police bus on 23rd December, and a failed bomb attack on Shell’s headquarters in Athens, said police officials on Wednesday.

Police said that the Revolutionary Struggle group claimed responsibility for the three attacks in a statement sent to the weekly Pontiki newspaper on Wednesday, adding that they have sent the anti-terrorist squad to the weekly’s office to investigate.

In October, the Greek police had Friday defused a powerful homemade bomb placed outside the headquarters of oil giant Royal Dutch Shell in Athens. Police officials had discovered the bomb, which was made up of several kilograms of dynamite and a timing device placed in a plastic container, on a tip-off.

On 23rd December, unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police riot van, but no one was injured in the incident. Greek police officials said then that a previously unknown group calling itself Popular Action had claimed responsibility for that attack.

Later on 5th January, one policeman was seriously injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire at a riot police unit outside the Culture Ministry in the Greek capital of Athens, and it came after weeks of violent protests in Greece over the death of a teenager in police firing on 6th December.

The leftist militant group has carried out several such attacks in the past, including the firing of a rocket propelled grenade into the US embassy in Athens. The group is seen widely seen as Greece’s biggest security threat after the break-up of the similar ‘November 17’ organization in 2002.
