Royal Dutch Shell’s plans for exploratory drilling in the US Arctic this summer will involve the harassment of whales and seals by the thousands, an application document filed by Shell to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) reveals.

Most notably, Shell estimates its Arctic activities will expose more than 2,500 bowhead whales, more than 2,500 gray whales and more than 50,000 ringed seals to continuous sounds and pulsed sounds, deemed damaging enough to constitute harassment.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A 2008 lease sale in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northwest coast remains legally flawed and should be cancelled, Alaska Native and environmental groups say in a court filing.

Earthjustice attorney Erik Grafe said Thursday the sale does did not follow federal environmental law despite Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s conclusion last month that shortcomings identified by a federal judge had been addressed. Top federal government scientists acknowledge gaps in what is known of basic features of the Arctic Ocean, Grafe said, such as areas important to bowhead and beluga whales, walrus, seals, birds and fish. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA)’s U.S. approval for oil exploration in Alaska’s Beaufort Sea will be contested by groups including the Natural Resources Defense Council and an Inupiat village worried about the risk of spills.

The Natural Resources Defense Council, based in New York, and Point Hope, a settlement on Alaska’s North Slope, will sue the Obama administration for a decision allowing drilling in the Beaufort Sea, according to an e-mailed statement today from the groups. read more
