Cleaning up extensive oil pollution in the Niger Delta is the primary responsibility of the Nigerian government, Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal told a parliamentary commission on Thursday.

He was supported by the Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs, Henk Bleker, who pointed out that the Nigerian government, like all governments, is responsible for the well-being of its population. On top of that the Nigerian state is the majority shareholder in the SPDC joint venture of oil companies that includes Royal Dutch Shell, Bleker added. read more

The Movement for Survival of Ogoni People, MOSOP, speaking through its President /Spokesman, Dr. Goodluck Diigbo has said that UNEP Ogoniland Assessment Report was already building up tension in Ogoniland and sowing seeds of inter and intra communal conflicts and war.

Diigbo said that the two Bodo oil spills reported in The Guardian, London published on August 3, 2011 for which Shell was said to have  admitted responsibility for (involving hundreds of millions of dollars), are in Gokana of Ogoniland, but the UNEP Ogoni Report states that the two oil spills are in Bolo and Ogu local government area, which is outside Ogoniland. read more

Our attention has been drawn to the most recent report on the oil spillage issue in the Ogoniland, Nigeria. This is a great victory for us and has been long overdue.

We have gathered from many sources that the United Nations is interested in  monitoring the cleaning up of Ogoniland oil spillage which should last for several years.

Most recently, we have also gathered that the Federal Government of Nigeria is considering taking over the responsibility for cleaning up Ogoniland through the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) of Nigeria (“Nigeria: FG to Clean up Ogoniland“, 7/08/2011. UN oil devastation report to be taken ‘seriously’: Shell

LAGOS — Shell’s managing director in Nigeria on Monday pledged the oil giant would take “seriously” a UN study on unprecedented pollution, but reiterated that the company was not to blame for most spills.

“It’s important for me to emphasise that we are taking the UNEP report very seriously,” Mutiu Sunmonu told AFP in an interview after the UN Environment Programme released the report last week.

“We are looking at it in greater detail. We are taking a comb through the report to see exactly what necessary follow-up actions will be required of SPDC.” read more

Goi is now a dead village. The two fish ponds, bakery and chicken farm that used to be the pride and joy of its chief deacon, Barrisa Tete Dooh, lie abandoned, covered in a thick black layer. The village’s fishing creek is contaminated; the school has been looted; the mangrove forests are coated in bitumen and everyone has left, refugees from a place blighted by the exploitation of the region’s most valuable asset: crude oil. read more

Shell Defends Self Over Oil Pollution in Ogoniland

Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria has absolved itself of any wrongdoing in respect of the widely reported 2008 oil spills in Ogoni communities in the Niger-Delta.

Apparently reacting to the recent report by the United Nations Environmental Programme on the pollution of Ogoniland, which indicted Shell, SPDC Managing Director, Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu, said “oil spills in the Niger-Delta are a tragedy,” adding, also, that the company “takes them very seriously”. read more
