Shell: The Benevolent Oil Giant Throwing Cash at Climate Denial and Conservative Crazies—Because Who Needs a Planet Anyway

Ah, Shell, the oil behemoth that just can’t stop outdoing itself in the race to be crowned the most unapologetically greedy, ruthlessly polluting corporation on the planet. They might be content with raking in $28.25 billion in adjusted earnings last year alone. But no, they’re also busy playing sugar daddy to a host of right-wing, anti-climate organizations. Because what’s better than sin stocks when you can double down on denying climate change while pretending to care?

It’s recently been revealed that Shell’s charmingly misnamed Shell USA Company Foundation has been funnelling hundreds of thousands of dollars to conservative and religious right groups—yes, the very ones who think climate change is a myth and LGBTQ+ rights are an abomination. Between 2013 and 2022, this “non-profit” (because they’ve got a sense of humour) donated $544,010 to organizations like the Heartland Institute, which heroically insists that “there is no climate crisis,” and the American Family Association, which believes the “climate change agenda is an attack on God’s creation.” You can practically hear the collective eye-roll of every sane person on Earth.

And let’s not forget the Heritage Foundation, the evil masterminds behind Project 2025, a delightful conservative wet dream of gutting the federal government and reducing the Environmental Protection Agency to a shadow of its former self. Shell’s foundation threw $23,321 their way because who wouldn’t want to support a think tank with a rich history of climate denial and ties to Donald Trump? Nothing screams “corporate responsibility” like backing groups dedicated to ensuring the planet goes up in flames while rolling back women’s rights and LGBTQ+ protections.

But don’t worry, folks—Shell’s got it all under control. According to a spokesperson, the foundation “does not endorse any organizations” and claims the employees just donate to whoever they please. Of course, Shell generously matches these donations up to $7,500 per employee, which means they’re basically handing out cash to groups that push anti-abortion laws, climate scepticism, and other regressive policies. But hey, they don’t “endorse” these organizations. They just give them money. Because that’s totally different.

And if you think this all sounds like a carefully orchestrated plan to keep the fossil fuel industry cosy with the powerful conservative agenda, you’d be absolutely right. Shell’s foundation is clearly making sure they’ve got friends in all the wrong places, just in case the world ever wakes up to the fact that we’re careening toward climate disaster.

So, the next time you see a Shell gas station, remember: you’re not just filling up your tank—you’re supporting a company that’s hard at work ensuring that the world remains a little bit worse for everyone. What could be more heartwarming than that?
