Ah, the unmistakable sight of a Shell gas station—the bright white, yellow, and red logo signaling another stop on Big Oil’s endless money train. But wait! That train appears to be making fewer stops lately. Shell, the ever-so-environmentally-conscious (cough decades of pollution cough) oil giant, is closing down 500 more of its stations by 2025. Why? Because, according to Shell, the demand for fuel is declining. Who knew? (Literally everyone paying attention to climate science and the auto industry).
Shell, currently sitting comfortably in third place among Texas gas station brands with 1,700 locations (because, of course, Texas), is now scrambling to “transition” into the future by installing more EV charging hubs. Yes, you heard that right: Shell, the fossil fuel behemoth that has spent decades downplaying climate change, is now pivoting to electric. It’s almost as if they see the writing on the wall and are desperately trying to stay relevant while still squeezing every last drop of profit from their dirty empire.
But let’s not be naive—this isn’t Shell suddenly growing a conscience. This is a strategic business move, likely cheered on by major investors like BlackRock and Vanguard, who continue to profit handsomely from Shell’s past and present environmental destruction. It’s a classic corporate two-step: rake in billions from oil, then jump on the “green” bandwagon when public pressure makes it profitable.
And let’s not forget: while Shell is busy closing stations and slapping some EV chargers around, they are still drilling, refining, and selling oil at full throttle. Their CEO would love for you to believe they’re leading the transition to clean energy, but in reality? They’re just hedging their bets, making sure they stay dominant no matter what powers your car in the future.
So, Shell’s grand plan? Shut down some stations, pivot just enough to stay relevant, and keep the shareholders happy. Because at the end of the day, it’s never really about the environment—it’s about maintaining that sweet, sweet revenue stream. Well played, Shell. Well played.
