Royal Dutch Shell is to outsource 3,000 IT jobs worldwide as part of a wider plan to save £250m.
The oil company has 3,200 staff in IT functions globally, comprising both contractors and employees. Approximately 3,000 of those positions will be outsourced, and 10% of those will be from the UK.
In December 2005, Shell launched a review into outsourcing part of its global IT business, and it expects an outsourcing deal to be finalised by mid 2008, said a spokeswoman.
“We are in the middle of early commercial discussions and no contract has been signed,” said the spokeswoman.
News of the jobs being outsourced was revealed via a leaked e-mail from Swee Chen Goh, vice-president of IT infrastructure at Shell, posted to an anti-Shell website.
The e-mail suggested that end-user computing services will be handled by US IT services company EDS, hosting and storage services will be handled by T-Systems, and managed network services will be provided by AT&T.
