Shell Ignores Legal Setback, Fires Up More North Sea Drilling

Drilling Ahead Despite Court Rulings and Climate Reality

In yet another display of corporate arrogance, Shell has gleefully resumed oil and gas drilling in the North Sea—mere days after a Scottish court blocked its Jackdaw gas project. But why let minor inconveniences like legal rulings, environmental destruction, or a planet hurtling towards climate catastrophe get in the way of record-breaking profits?

The oil giant announced yesterday that it has restarted production at the Penguins field, proving once again that Shell will do whatever the hell it wants so long as there’s money to be made. Forget the fact that a judge in Edinburgh’s Court of Sessions just ruled the previous Tory government’s approval of Jackdaw as ‘unlawful’—Shell is charging full speed ahead anyway.

Of course, this is all happening while Shell whines about how Britain needs more oil and gas, warning that the UK is too dependent on imports. Ah yes, the classic fossil fuel industry tactic: hold the public hostage by refusing to invest in renewable energy while pretending that their continued destruction of the planet is some sort of public service.

Let’s talk about the Penguins field—originally discovered in 1974 and milked for oil and gas from 2003 to 2021, now resurrected like a zombie because apparently Shell just can’t let go. According to the company, Penguins will produce enough gas to heat around 700,000 homes a year. A nice little stat to make it sound like they’re doing the world a favor, rather than continuing to fuel climate collapse.

And let’s not forget Shell’s biggest cheerleaders: BlackRock and Vanguard, two of the world’s largest asset managers, who love to pose as ESG champions while stuffing their portfolios with Shell’s dirty money. Because nothing says ‘sustainable investment’ like backing one of the world’s most relentless polluters.

Shell’s latest stunt also reignites the age-old tantrum about whether they’ll take their stock market listing and run to New York if the UK doesn’t roll out the red carpet for more oil drilling. As if Shell isn’t already one of the most profitable companies on Earth.

So, what’s next? More drilling, more emissions, more lawsuits, and absolutely zero fucks given about the planet. Because when it comes to Shell, profit is the only thing that matters.
