The Shell reserves scandal: A deep dive into corporate deception

Imagine a world where the most valuable asset of a global powerhouse wasn’t real. This was the reality of Shell’s reserves scandal, a story of inflated oil reserves, executive resignations, and a company brought to its knees by its own ambition and deceit.

Shell, one of the world’s leading oil and gas companies, confessed to a bombshell revelation: it had overstated its “proven” oil and gas reserves by a staggering 3.9 billion barrels, approximately 20% of its previously declared holdings. read more

Shell Ditches Hydrogen Plans in Norway – Apparently Destroying the Planet Is Easier Than Decarbonizing It

Look who’s pulling out of yet another “green” project. Shell – that beacon of environmental virtue (LOL) – has just scrapped its plans for a hydrogen plant on Norway’s west coast. Why, you ask? Because apparently, there’s just not enough demand for “blue hydrogen.” Yes, the same Shell that’s been sucking oil out of the ground for over a century like a vampire at an all-you-can-drink blood buffet is now suddenly worried about market viability for clean energy. Color me shocked. read more

Shell Norway Whistleblowers

by John Donovan

In early 2017, I was approached by two Shell whistleblowers, both former  Shell Norway safety delegates at the Shell Nyhamna Gas facility.

Runar Kjørsvik was the chief safety officer at the gas facility until he was fired.

Bjørn Tore Røshol took over the office. Runar and his family ended up being the subjects of a surveillance operation. Employees had been exposed to very high and harmful doses of benzene.

Runar accused Shell management of:

  • exposing plant employees to benzene contamination.
  • manipulating safety-related reports and environment committee meeting minutes.
  • cutting him out of important safety-related meetings.
  • a surveillance operation resulting in photographic evidence being gathered and handed over to Shell.
  • total humiliation inflicted at a meeting called in the presence of 150 co-workers assembled specifically for his ostracisation in the staff canteen. As already indicated, Shell filmed the event.
  • systematic harassment by email and heated criticism (being shouted at).
  • false accusations by Shell managers concerned about losing their bonuses.
  • alleged gossip, smears and false accusations.
  • a ban on him from speaking to his fellow Shell employees.
  • his wrongful dismissal
  • making him the target of a victimisation campaign

Shell admitted a culture of fear at the plant. read more
