Shell Shocked: Russia Sues the Oil Giant in a Hilarious Twist of Karma!

7 Oct 2024

The world’s favourite planet-scorching, cash-grabbing, ethics-optional corporation, Shell, is finding itself in yet another pickle. What a shocker! This time, the company famous for bathing in oil and bad decisions is facing a lawsuit from none other than Russia’s Prosecutor General.

The lawsuit, filed on October 2nd, was hurled at eight of Shell’s many tentacles—I mean, units—by a delightful cocktail of plaintiffs: Gazprom Export, the Russian energy ministry, regional authorities from the quaint Pacific island of Sakhalin (where environmental destruction is basically a hobby), Sakhalin Energy, and, of course, Russia’s top prosecutor. Everyone and their dog in the Russian energy sector is lining up to take a swing at Shell. It’s a regular “How dare you out-greed us?” moment.

Naturally, Shell—the master of dodging responsibility and press inquiries—declined to comment. Because, really, what can you say when you’re caught with your hands in the world’s dirtiest cookie jar?

Let’s rewind a bit. Before Russia decided to redefine “peacekeeping” with tanks in Ukraine in 2022, Shell was happily running its dirty little operation in Russia. The star of the show? A stake in the liquefied natural gas plant on the totally pristine Pacific island of Sakhalin, run by everyone’s favourite shady overlord, Gazprom. But wait, it gets better! Shell was also knee-deep in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, because why stop at just ruining one part of the planet when you can destroy two?

Of course, when Western sanctions hit, Shell didn’t exactly make a graceful exit. Oh no, they were dragged out, kicking and screaming, as Russia gleefully consolidated its control over the Sakhalin plant. Now, Shell’s long gone from Russia—but apparently, not far enough. Gazprom and friends are still coming for that sweet, sweet retribution.

In true Shell fashion, the company will probably throw some cash around, promise to plant a few trees, and hope we all forget about this by next week. But hey, even a giant oil company can get caught in the oil slick once in a while. Call it karma or just plain hilarious. Either way, Shell’s getting sued—again.

Quotes, for your entertainment:

No extra details were provided in the lawsuit because, of course, why make it easy? But we do know Shell “declined to comment.” Shocker.

Just in case you forgot, Shell was super involved in Russia until “Moscow sent its army into Ukraine in February 2022 in what it called a special military operation” (you know, that thing everyone else calls an invasion). At that point, Shell’s Russian dream was over, and they left behind their stake in Sakhalin and the rest of their ill-advised ventures in Russia.

And now? Russia’s coming for what’s left. Buckle up, Shell—you might be swimming in lawsuits instead of oil this time.
