Shell in Germany seeks to speed up drive to go green

FRANKFURT, Feb 26 (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell in Germany aims to produce aviation fuel and naphtha made from crops and renewable power and to increase to commercial scale an electrolysis plant that makes fossil-free hydrogen, as it seeks to move away from crude oil.

The energy major told an online conference on Friday it had applied for subsidies to carry out the work from the European Union and from German funds earmarked for decarbonisation. read more

The BBC recently published an article under the headline: Shell’s legal woes over Nigeria’s oil.

The article listed some of the growing numbers of lawsuits being brought against Shell in multiple legal jurisdictions, all arising from Shell’s deplorable conduct in Nigeria.

The damaging global news coverage reporting on the various court actions seems to have stung Shell’s CEO Ben van Beurden into threatening that Shell may pack its corporate bags and pull out of Nigeria. read more

Court Issues Criminal Summons Against Shell, 7 Others over Alleged Oil Theft

A judge of an Upper Area Court in Abuja, Gambo Garba, on Thursday issued a criminal summons against Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) of Nigeria and seven of its top executives over alleged stealing of 16 million barrels of crude oil through the use of a fraudulent and unapproved metering system.

The executives summoned were Chibueze Uduanochie, Simon Ruddy, Bashir Bello, Osagie Okunbor, Igo Weli, Toyin Olagunji and Captain Callium Finlayson. read more

Royal Dutch Shell plc, one of the leading natural gas traders in the world, said Thursday consumption held steady in 2020 despite Covid-19 and is on course to expand as economies recover. However, a dearth in sanctioned projects is forecast to create a supply gap.

By Dina Khrennikova and Anna Shiryaevskaya | Bloomberg: Feb. 25, 2021 A natural gas pipeline being built under the Baltic Sea from Russia to the German coast is shaking up geopolitics. Nord Stream 2, as it’s called, fuels worries in the U.S. and other countries that the link could give the Kremlin new leverage over Germany and other NATO allies. Pipe construction, halted in 2019, resumed in December 2020, yet U.S. sanctions still threaten to pull the brakes on the project backed by the Russia’s Gazprom PJSC.

1. What is Nord Stream 2?

It’s a 1,230-kilometer (764-mile) gas pipeline that will double the capacity of the existing undersea route from Russian fields to Europe — the original Nord Stream — which opened in 2011. Gazprom owns the project operator, with Royal Dutch Shell Plc and four other investors contributing half of the 9.5 billion-euro ($11.6 billion) cost. Initially expected to come online by the end of 2019, the link has been delayed by U.S. sanctions that forced Swiss contractor Allseas Group SA to withdraw its pipelaying vessels when all but 160 kilometers of the link was in place. When Nord Stream 2 started construction again, Russian vessels were deployed to lay 2.6 kilometers in Germany’s exclusive economic zone. In January 2021 work resumed on the Danish section. read more

The oil giant belonged to one group that pushed for a rule designed to preempt banks’ policies against lending for Arctic drilling and coal mining.

Royal Dutch Shell vowed last September to reach net-zero carbon pollution in its business by 2050. The goal was vague but notable, and seemed to become more realistic when the corporation announced earlier this month that its crude oil production had peaked in 2019 and would likely never increase again. read more

Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo of the Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday fixed March 2 for ruling on whether to entertain the motion challenging the jurisdiction of the court or the contempt proceedings in a suit Aiteo Eastern E & P Company Limited filed against Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited and four others.

The judge fixed the date after listening to arguments from counsel in the suit. read more

3 former Shell employees linked to $200 million gas oil heist charged with graft

SINGAPORE – Three former Shell Eastern Petroleum employees linked to a $200 million gas oil heist have been charged with bribing employees of surveying companies who inspected vessels which the oil giant supplied fuel to.

Juandi Pungot, 44, Muzaffar Ali Khan Muhamad Akram, 40, and Richard Goh Chee Keong, 51, appeared before a district court on Tuesday (Feb 23) to have their charges read out to them.

All three had previously been charged with criminal breach of trust over their alleged involvement in a conspiracy that led to more than 300,000 tonnes of gas oil worth about US$150 million (S$200 million) being stolen from Shell’s biggest global refinery. read more

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has said it is working to secure expeditious discharge of court order freezing its accounts, which was obtained by AITEO Eastern (E&P) Company Limited.

AITEO had sought an ex-parte order from a Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos for an injunction directing 20 commercial banks to block accounts of SPDC and affiliates of the Royal Dutch Shell company operating in Nigeria in a bid to recover cash value of more than 16 million barrels of crude allegedly diverted by the oil giant. read more

A Nigerian court has restricted Royal Dutch Shell’s (RDS.A, RDS.B) access to its bank accounts in the country amid a legal dispute over a pipeline deal six years ago.

A local oil producer is demanding billions of dollars in damages, claiming Shell misrepresented the condition of the pipeline and undercounted the volume of crude one of its facilities received from the Nigerian company, Bloomberg reports, citing court documents.

The allegations involve its $2.4B purchase in 2015 of a 45% interest in an oil block and pipeline from three multinational companies, including Shell.

The dispute is just one among several related to Shell’s activities in Nigeria; YTD, a Dutch court has ruled Shell is liable for oil spills in two villages 13 years ago, and the U.K. Supreme Court allowed 40K fishermen and farmers to sue Shell in England.

LONDON (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell set out plans on Thursday to boost the use of nature-based carbon offsets and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, two climate solutions in their infancy but seen crucial to controlling global warming.

Both technologies can mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions Shell and its customers cannot eliminate on the path to the group’s 2050 net zero carbon target.

Shell wants to ramp up its use of nature-based carbon offsets, which include forestation projects, to 120 million tonnes a year by 2030, a big jump given the entire voluntary carbon offset market reached 104 million tonnes in 2019, Ecosystem Marketplace figures show. read more

TOKYO (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell and renewables firm Eneco, owned by Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp, will provide Amazon.com Inc’s European facilities with electricity from an offshore wind farm, they said on Monday.

Retail giant Amazon, which faces pressure from environmental activists over its carbon footprint, has vowed to be net carbon neutral by 2040. Starting in 2024, it will off-take 380 megawatts (MW) of capacity from the Hollandske Kust Noord offshore wind farm, which is being built jointly by Shell and Eneco, the two energy firms said without disclosing financial details. read more

Shell unveils green strategy after oil output peak

Energy giant Royal Dutch Shell declared Thursday that its oil output is locked in decline after peaking in 2019 as it outlined green plans to switch away from fossil fuels.

Shell said in a statement that it will invest up to $6.0 billion (4.9 billion euros) per year in green energy projects developing and promoting biofuels, electric car charging and renewables.

More than half the amount could end up being spent on marketing, Shell said.

In addition, Shell plans to still invest $8 billion annually on new oil and gas exploration. read more
