(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell has postponed an innovative project to provide subsea gas compression on Norway’s Ormen Lange field, one of the biggest gas fields in Europe, it said on Friday. “The oil and gas industry has a cost challenge,” Shell said in a statement. “This, in combination with the maturity and complexity of the concepts and the production volume uncertainty, makes the project no longer economically feasible.” read more

Rolf Wilborg, Bill Campbell and the battle for offshore safety

Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 17.44.20There is a striking similarity between Rolf’s case and the whistleblower activities of Bill Campbell, the retired Health & Safety Group Auditor of Shell International who warned Shell about evidence of false and misleading information in Shell Brent Bravo maintenance records, prior to the tragic, but avoidable explosion in which offshore workers were killed. Safety records had been routinely falsified and Shell had operated a notorious “Touch Fuck All” maintenance policy that put production (and profits) before safety.

Oil, Gas Producers Look to Expand Arctic Exploration

Updated June 26, 2012, 12:02 p.m. ET

By KJETIL MALKENES HOVLAND and ANNA MOLIN

TRONDHEIM, Norway—Two of the world’s major oil and gas producing nations, bolstered by big Arctic discoveries in recent years, are looking to further develop one of the world’s most remote regions as a more vibrant hub of exploration.

Norway plans to award new drilling licenses for dozens of blocks of sea acreage in icy Arctic waters as early as 2013, Norway’s oil ministry said at a conference here Tuesday. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, speaking at the same conference, said the Obama administration plans to further open and develop its own Arctic areas for drilling to continue reducing that nation’s dependence on foreign imports. read more

Shell Bid Starts Race for African Gas Fields Bigger Than Norway’s: Energy

By Eduard Gismatullin and Fred Pals – Feb 23, 2012 9:45 AM GMT

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA)’s $1.6 billion bid for Cove Energy Plc (COV) starts a race to develop natural-gas fields off Mozambique’s Indian Ocean coast that may hold more than Norway’s entire reserves.

Winning Cove would give Shell an 8.5 percent stake in a block where Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (APC) has found 30 trillion cubic feet of gas. Italy’s Eni SpA (ENI) has discovered even more in a neighboring area. Together, there’s sufficient fuel for the development of two $20 billion liquefied natural gas plants to supply customers in Asia, according to Deutsche Bank AG. read more

Shell slammed for ‘serious’ safety slips

Anglo-Dutch supermajor Shell has been hit with a safety order from the Norwegian authorities following an investigation into a well incident on the Draugen platform in December last year.

Aleya Begum 23 May 2011 11:44 GMT

The Petroleum Safety Authority said today its investigation of the incident identified several serious breaches of the regulations.

“The non-conformities are related to inadequate management, inadequate risk assessment, inadequate well barriers, inadequate well barrier sketches, inadequate well control, and inadequate daily reporting of drilling and well activities,” said the PSA.

The incident occurred during a wireline operation to replace a gas lift valve in well 6407/9-A-01. The operation resulted in the subsurface safety valve becoming stuck in the Xmas tree, blocking the upper mast valve, and leaving only one barrier against a potential leak. read more

Shell’s Gro Natural-Gas Find Off Norway Seen at Lower Range of Estimates

By Fred Pals and Marianne Stigset – // <![CDATA[// Aug 27, 2010 11:07 AM

Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s deepwater appraisal well at the Gro natural-gas discovery indicated the find may be at the lower end of estimates, potentially denting plans for a new production hub in the Norwegian Sea.

“The reservoir quality is poorer than expected,” the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said today in a statement. “Preliminary estimates place the size of the discovery in the lower range of the original resource estimates.”

The find at a depth of 1,300 meters (4,300 feet) was estimated to hold 10 billion to 100 billion cubic meters of gas. Norway, the world’s second-biggest gas exporter, is seeking to develop a center for production in the Norwegian Sea that also includes finds by Statoil ASA and Total SA. The country is seeking to raise gas production as North Sea oil fields are depleted after 40 years of production. read more

Dry Hole at Shell’s Gro Prospect Would Hinder Gas-Hub Efforts, Norway Says

Bloomberg

By Marianne Stigset – Aug 25, 2010 4:01 PM GMT+0100

A dry appraisal well at Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s Gro discovery in the Norwegian Sea would be a blow to efforts to develop a hub for natural gas production, the country’s Petroleum Directorate said.

Newspaper Upstream reported today that a Shell appraisal well at Gro was “virtually dry,” citing an unidentified person in the industry. The result means the volume estimate of 10 billion to 100 billion cubic meters of gas is expected to remain unchanged, Upstream said. read more

Norway Oil Producers Say Rig Strike Can Be Averted (Update1)

The Norwegian Organization of Managers and Executives said it will pull 86 workers from StatoilHydro ASA's Snorre A platform and Royal Dutch Shell Plc's Draugen A rig on June 7 if a new agreement isn't reached on wages and working hours. The strike imperils output of 220,000 barrels of oil a day, or about 9 percent of Norway's total oil production.

Talks aim to avert Arctic oil rush

Commercial interest in exploiting the Arctic is hotting up. Denmark recently attracted the likes of ExxonMobil and Chevron, the two biggest US energy groups, along with several smaller players, to explore off its western coast. Alaska, meanwhile, garnered aggressive bidding by Royal Dutch Shell, Europe's biggest energy group, which earlier this year won the right to explore the remote part of the state's Arctic North Slope.

Tuesday 6 Sept 2005

Oil company Shell has shut down all of the 28 propane (LPG) pumps at its Norwegian gas stations. On Tuesday Shell flew in an expert from its Dutch headquarters, in the hopes of preventing gas leaks and explosions like one that occurred last summer.

SHELL, the Anglo-Dutch energy giant, appears to have made its biggest gas strike off Norway for more than a decade.

The company said it had found gas at its Onyx prospect in the Norwegian Sea, with Norwegian officials suggesting a major find.

In a statement, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) said: “The size of the discovery may approach 60 billion standard cubic metres of producible gas.”

It added: “Gas was proven in Jurassic sandstones and two successful production tests were performed.” read more
