The Dutch royal family remains a major shareholder in Royal Dutch Shell Plc. Beatrix of the Netherlands (above) reigned as Queen of the Netherlands from 1980 until her abdication in April 2013. She is the eldest daughter of Prince Bernard, until 1934 a Nazi stormtrooper. He redeemed himself after switching sides and fighting against the Nazis in World War 2.

My son John recently received his first letter from Royal Dutch Shell Plc. It proudly displays the royal crown of the Dutch royal family. The oil giant bears the Royal prefix because Royal Dutch has enjoyed a strong link with the Dutch royal family for over a hundred years.

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands granted a royal charter to a small oil exploration company founded in 1890 by Jean Kessler, along with Henri Deterding and Hugo Loudon, which evolved into the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company. Queen Wilhelmina was a very shrewd investor and became the wealthiest woman in the world. At one time, the Dutch royals apparently owned as much as 25% of the oil company. read more

“Senior figures from the company even had to approach Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, to gain her royal assent for the move. It is believed to be the first time the Dutch royal monicker has been applied to a UK-listed company.”

In a historic vote on Tuesday, Royal Dutch/Shell shareholders bade farewell to a century of history, approving a plan to scrap the UK and Dutch parents of the group in favour of a single, unified company.

The vote had been locked-up with the aid of large investors ahead of Tuesday’s annual general meetings in London and Scheveningen. But the vote did not proceed before a handful of elderly investors in both meetings raised their objections to the passing of what they see as their national champions. read more
