Hydrogen is often hailed as a silver bullet solution to emissions-free fuel since it burns clean, leaving nothing but water vapor, but the reality of using and producing green hydrogen is much more complicated. Hydrogen is already used as a power source in a lot of modern industries, including ammonia production, in refineries and as a feedstock for chemicals. The vast majority of the hydrogen in use, however, is not green hydrogen, but instead is what is known as “gray hydrogen.” While the hydrogen itself burns clean, the means of producing that hydrogen is actually fossil-fuels intensive (most often using coal or natural gas) and therefore does nothing in the way of decarbonizing the industries in which it is used.

Shell Energy apologises to a distressed terrorised pensioner
Printed below is the main content of a Shell Energy letter dated 24 Feb 2020 to a distressed terrorised pensioner apologising for issues raised, including shortfalls in service, overcharging and bullyboy tactics.
Hello Mr XXXX
Ombudsman Final Decision dated 24 February 2020
We’ve set out below the list of remedies set by the Ombudsman and the status of each. If there’s any outstanding matters left to address. I’ve confirmed when you’ll expect your next update and/or resolution.
The Ombudsman decided that Shell Energy should:
- Provide you with a goodwill payment of £200 in recognition of the shortfalls in service you have experienced this will be credited to the account within 10 working days.
- Credit your account with £820.79 in recognition of overcharging you for 4399kWh of electricity rather than re-billing your account and re-applying SLC 21BA as proposed by Shell Energy. This has been completed by correcting the inial read on the account 61750.
- The remaining balance on the account after the £200 gesture of goodwill has been applied will be £1199.50
I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the issues raised and the inconvenience it has caused. It is important to us that we provide a consistent and accurate service and to do this we continue to provide visibility and feedback to other departments regarding matters such as yours.
Reuters: Shell and Gasunie plan to build massive Dutch green hydrogen plant
FEBRUARY 27, 2020 / 10:26 AM
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – Oil and gas company Royal Dutch Shell and Dutch gas company Gasunie [GSUNI.UL] plan to build a massive green hydrogen plant in the northern Netherlands in the next decade, the companies said on Thursday, to cut emissions.
Fueled by a large new wind farm off the coast of Groningen province, the plant would ultimately be able to produce 800,000 tonnes of hydrogen by 2040, the companies said, cutting the Netherlands’ CO2 emissions by about 7 megaton per year.

Oil giant Shell, gas group Gasunie and Groningen’s port authority are joining forces to build a massive offshore wind farm and hydrogen plant in the northern province, Dutch media reported on Thursday.
The plan, dubbed NortH2, will be formally presented on Thursday afternoon but will, the companies say, be one of the ‘biggest renewable energy projects in the world’.
The project is still at the planning stage and definitive investment decisions still have to be taken.
Reuters: Jesuit order to ditch fossil fuels from $500 mln equity portfolio
…it is more than halfway through the process of selling out of its holdings in oil majors BP, Shell and Total.
by Reuters: Wednesday, 26 February 2020 00:01 GMT
LONDON, Feb 26 (Reuters) – Catholic religious order Jesuits in Britain will ditch fossil fuel companies from its $500 million equity portfolio by the end of the year, it said on Wednesday, citing corporate failure to respond quickly to the threat of climate change.
Asset managers responsible for more than $14 trillion have divested from the sector in recent years, though many more prefer to remain invested and engage with companies to change their business strategies.
Some companies have sought to address investor concern, including BP’s pledge this month to reduce its carbon emissions, though critics have said that such measures have not gone far enough.
Shell spends millions a year to block or influence climate policies

As political and economic tides shift, pressure on Shell—from shareholders, evolving new technologies, and climate-aware consumers—to reinvent itself is mounting, while legal action has been taken against the company over its climate impacts.
Shell’s own research warned more than a quarter-century ago that burning fossil fuels posed catastrophic threats, yet it continued to pump billions into climate-disrupting ventures.
Shell has come under fire for its fierce campaigns against climate action. According to reports, it is among oil firms that spend millions a year lobbying to block or influence climate policies.

Shell Petroleum Development Company poisoning Nigerian waterways
The spread of deadly chemicals by Shell Petroleum Development Company in the waterways of Odimodi and its federated communities of Iduwini Kingdom (Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State), has triggered massive poisoning of the fish population and other aquatic bodies in its waters. There is fear that the chemicals will have great and far-reaching implications on human health and environmental issues.

EMAIL RECEIVED BY JOHN DONOVAN TODAY FROM: The distressed unwell disabled pensioner terrorised by Shell Energy
FYI. Posted the following on two FB forums this morning:-
Yesterday I reluctantly accepted the Ombudsman’s decision.
I have always made it abundantly clear to Shell that my preferred means of communication is via Resolver and under no circumstances did I want (trust) to talk to them on the phone.
Despite this, while driving home from shopping yesterday afternoon, I receive a telephone call from the Shell Energy Ombudsman department. I told him I was driving and that it was not convenient.

Malabu Scandal: Italian judge orders prosecution of Nigerian businessman

An Italian judge has ordered a controversial businessman, Aliyu Abubakar, to stand trial, for his role in the Malabu OPL 245 scandal.
Reuters reported Wednesday that the Milan prosecutors alleged that Mr Abubakar played a major role in one of the oil industry’s biggest scandal in years.
The controversial businessman, through his companies, received over half of the $1.1 billion paid by Shell and Eni for OPL 245. He also allegedly gave out more than $500 million in cash to powerful Nigerian government officials.
WSJ: Investors Retreat From Oil Firms in Sign of Rising Skepticism
By Sarah McFarlane: Updated Feb. 24, 2020 10:33 am ET
Major oil companies are working hard to articulate a vision for their future, but the energy sector’s poor performance shows that many investors aren’t buying it.
Companies including Royal Dutch Shell PLC, BP PLC and Total SA have launched plans to turn themselves into lower-carbon businesses. But with low oil prices pressuring the industry’s economics and many investors saying it is too early to know whether the intended transformations will generate significant returns, there is growing skepticism on Wall Street over the…

Dutch companies including Shell and NAM, funded well known climate skeptic Frits Böttcher
English translation of an article published 23 Feb 2020 by the Dutch Financial Times (FD)
Dutch industry funded climate skeptic Frits Böttcher
From our editor
According to FTM, Shell is one of the companies that Böttcher financed. Photo: ANP
In brief
- Climate skeptic Frits Böttcher received at least one million guilders fom the Dutch business community in the 1990s.
- At the request of donors, he wrote activist papers in which he denied the existence of the greenhouse effect.
- Partly due to his work, there was little support for sustainable climate policy at the end of the last decade.
Between 1989 and 1998, Frits Böttcher received at least one million guilders (€ 450,000) from 24 Dutch companies, including Shell, NAM, AkzoNobel and DSM. With that money he set up an international network of climate skeptics. At the request of the donors, he also wrote activist papers and articles in which he denied the existence of the greenhouse effect. This is the result of research by Follow the Money (FTM) and the Authentic Journalism Platform (PAJ), who have access to the personal archive of Böttcher, who died in 2008.
