  • Residents want to use 2019 ruling to access U.K. courts
  • Shell says compensation lawsuit should take place in Nigeria

Thousands of Nigerians are asking British judges to give them permission to sue Royal Dutch Shell Plc in London over environmental damage caused by oil spills 3,000 miles away in Africa.

Lawyers for residents of the crude-rich Niger Delta believe a landmark U.K. Supreme Court ruling last year against a London-based miner should set a precedent. Shell, which has blocked the suit twice from entering British courts, says the litigation should be heard in the West African country. read more

It was only in December 2018 that his arrival was announced

“Shell Australia, a unit of the Hague-based LNG giant Shell, recently welcomed Rob Jager to Perth as the new vice president for the massive Prelude FLNG project.”

Jager moved to Perth from New Zealand, where he was the Country Chair & VP for Shell New Zealand / Shell Taranaki for more than 13 years. read more

American Ballet Theatre Bizarre Pas de deux with British Spy Firm, Hakluyt & Co

By John Donovan

I wonder if the American Ballet Theatre is aware of the sinister background of its new benefactor, Hakluyt & Co – the corporate intelligence agency sometimes described as the commercial offshoot of MI6.

Titled Shell directors, the late Sir Peter Holmes, and Sir William Purves, were also directors, major shareholders and spymasters of Hakluyt & Company, a UK corporate espionage firm founded by former senior MI6 officers. BP directors were also involved.

Shell used Hakluyt to engage in cloak and dagger operations against its perceived enemies, including Greenpeace, as exposed in a Sunday Times front-page lead article “MI6 ‘firm’ spied on green groups”. Continuing on to an inside page feature headlined “How agent Camus sunk Greenpeace oil protests”.  read more

After BP takes a hit, investors widen climate change campaign

Reuters: Matthew Green and Simon Jessop: June 22, 2020

LONDON — Investors managing £1.8 trillion ($2.2 trillion) in assets are widening a campaign pressing oil majors to better reflect climate risks in their accounting, and will soon target other businesses with heavy fossil fuel exposure, the group said on Monday.

The investors believe their campaign is working, noting the “hugely important” news of BP joining other oil majors in lowering the value of its assets amid a global transition to cleaner energy, said Natasha Landell-Mills, head of stewardship at asset manager Sarasin & Partners. read more

Even the oil giants can now foresee the end of the gasoline age

The fall in fuel use during the pandemic has caused Shell and BP to fundamentally reappraise their future profitability Sun 21 Jun 2020

Coronavirus has dealt the fossil-fuel industry the biggest single blow in its history, and it is clear that 2020’s plummeting demand for oil and gas is no mere flesh wound. The global Covid-19 crisis may have already triggered a terminal decline for big oil.

BP’s decision last week to reset its oil price forecasts for the next three decades was the latest tremor in a seismic shift for the industry. Its forecasts of a $75-a-barrel oil price over the next 30 years were scrapped in favour of an average price of $55. The watershed decision wiped more than $17bn from the value of its business at a stroke read more

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL: No clean up, no justice: Shell’s oil pollution in the Niger Delta

18 JUNE 2020

Nearly 10 years after a clean-up was urged for areas polluted by Shell and other oil companies in the Niger Delta, work has begun on only 11% of planned sites while vast areas remain heavily contaminated, according to a new investigation by four NGOs.

In 2011 the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) released a report documenting the devastating impact of the oil industry in Ogoniland, and set out urgent recommendations for clean-up. But the new investigation highlights that “emergency measures” proposed by UNEP have not been properly implemented and that the billion-dollar clean-up project launched by the Nigerian government in 2016 has been ineffective. read more

Bloomberg: Pandemic Brings Pain and Opportunity for Fragile Oil Giants

BLOOMBERG: By Laura Hurst: 16 June 2020, 00:01 BST Updated on 16 June 2020, 13:43 BST

The coronavirus has exposed the fragility of some of the world’s biggest oil and gas companies, but also given them the opportunity to make investors swallow some unpleasant remedies.

Since the pandemic started, BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell Plc have made drastic changes to their businesses, from multibillion-dollar writedowns to big cuts to dividends and jobs.

They explained these moves as responses to the dual threats of the lockdown-induced oil slump and the growing pressure to cut carbon emissions. Yet the decisions say as much about the companies’ individual fragility as they do of the challenges faced by the broader industry. read more

British oil major predicts that the coronavirus pandemic will hurt long-term demand

BLOOMBERG: 15 JUNE 2020

BP will write down the value of its business by as much as $17.5 billion, as the British oil major predicts that the coronavirus pandemic will hurt long-term demand and accelerate the shift to cleaner energy.

The company is also undertaking a review of its projects that could result in some oil discoveries being left in the ground.

It’s the latest in a series of big shifts from BP, which has pivoted sharply toward clean energy under its new chief executive officer Bernard Looney. Shares fell 5 per cent to 307 pence as of 8.15am in London. read more

OPL 245: The Nigerian Ministry of Justice Needs To Get Its Act Together

14 JUNE 2020

As oil prices tumble and the world heads into a COVID-19-induced recession, Nigeria needs every naira that it can recover from looted assets that are hidden abroad.

It was never going to be easy getting Nigeria’s money back. The forces lined up against justice for the victims of corruption are mighty, and if they are to be countered, it demands nothing less than the full commitment of the Ministry of Justice to a coherent, well-funded, transparent asset recovery programme. read more

Maybe the Shell job cuts should start at the top?

POSTING SAT 13 JUNE 2020 ON OUR SHELL BLOG

Money in the pockets?:

And 8% to 12% currently we don’t even make in our upstream businessBvB… That performance includes the huge over runs on Corrib, Penn Chem, Prelude, multiple other LNG projects, Alaska Fiasco, and many other (not to mention OPL 245).

It is such an embarrassing comparison to ExxonMobil in projects like Liza, which is highly likely to exceed returns Shell is chasing as a utility. Brasil (or Mexico) have the capacity to deliver similar returns to Liza, if there was leadership and strategy for a long term development. read more

OilPrice.com: Is Shell’s Dividend Cut Permanent?

By Leonard Hyman and William Tilles for Oilprice.com

Investors were more than annoyed when Royal Dutch Shell slashed its dividend by two thirds. Just last year, the giant oil company announced its plan to pay out huge dividends over the coming five years. Actually, the investors used stronger terms than “annoyed.” They had reason to be annoyed after the strong commitment to the dividend, but maybe they should have previously shown a greater skepticism about the ability of any management to make such a commitment. Times change and perhaps no managements or boards should publicly commit to actions so far ahead of time. read more
