Shell leaves refinery business in Denmark

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Sept. 15 (UPI) — For about $80 million in capital, Royal Dutch Shell said Thursday it was keeping its upstream Danish interests in check, but unloading a refinery operation.

Shell said it reached an agreement with a Danish company to sell its refinery operations, which includes the Fredericia refinery that has the capacity to handle 70,000 barrels of product per day. The Dutch supermajor said its exploration and production interests in Denmark would not be impacted by the transaction. read more

Closed-door Arctic deal denounced as ‘carve-up’

Environmentalists today denounced as a territorial "carve-up" a deal signed by five Arctic nations seeking to resolve competing claims for control of the polar region.

Talks aim to avert Arctic oil rush

Commercial interest in exploiting the Arctic is hotting up. Denmark recently attracted the likes of ExxonMobil and Chevron, the two biggest US energy groups, along with several smaller players, to explore off its western coast. Alaska, meanwhile, garnered aggressive bidding by Royal Dutch Shell, Europe's biggest energy group, which earlier this year won the right to explore the remote part of the state's Arctic North Slope.
