Shell yet to pay any extra windfall tax, bosses confirm
Oil giants were hit by an extra windfall charge in May this year, but they could get around it by investing more in the UK.
By August Graham: 27 Oct 2022
Oil giant Shell has avoided paying any extra windfall tax despite making record profits so far this year as the business said it was investing heavily in the North Sea.
The company said that it does not expect to pay any extra tax this year due to the Government’s decision in May to put a windfall tax on North Sea oil and gas producers.
Finance boss Sinead Gorman told reporters on Thursday that the company had done enough over recent months to avoid the tax – which allowed companies to get tax relief in exchange for investment.
“Heavy capex (capital expenditure) has meant that we haven’t had extra tax coming through in this quarter yet,” she said.
“I do expect to see that extra tax … to happen quite early in the first quarter of 2023, but we’ll see what plays out with prices as well.”read more

Shell is ploughing £1.3bn into a Qatari gas project in a huge boost to supplies. The oil giant will take a 9.4pc stake in North Field South, which will expand Qatar’s liquified natural gas output by 16m tons a year.
Qatar is trying to consolidate its position as the world’s biggest natural gas exporter by ramping up capacity from 77m tons per year to 126m tons per year by 2027.
There has been a surge in demand for natural gas, which is seen as a key pillar of the world’s transition to net zero CO2 emissions. Shell boss Ben Van Beurden said its investment in the gas field, run by stateowned QatarEnergy, will help bolster energy security and the transition to net zero.read more
The historic profit run from oil and gas titans is expected to slow down this week, when Shell unveils its latest results.
Producers are grappling with both inflation and suppressed demand amid growing expectations of a global recession.
Shell has warned ahead of its third quarter update this week that earnings will likely be dented by a sharp hike in refining costs and weaker natural gas trading.
In an update earlier this month, it revealed indicative refining margins dropped to $15 a barrel compared with $28 a barrel in the previous three months of trading.
The energy giant will update investors on its performance this Thursday, the first in a wave of results from oil and gas giants over the coming days.
Rivals BP, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Equinor and Saudi Aramco will also announce their results over the coming days – offering markets a flurry of data on the latest conditions in the fossil fuel sector.read more
Europe faces long-term pain from energy crisis: Shell CEO
23 Oct 2022
Doha (AFP) – Europe faces painful “industrial rationalisation” due to its energy crisis that risks political trouble, the head of Shell warned Sunday, as the oil giant joined a natural gas project in Qatar.
Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden agreed a deal for a 9.3 percent stake in Qatar Energy’s North Field South project, that will play a major role in the Gulf state’s effort to increase liquefied natural gas (LNG) production by 50 percent in the next five years.
At the signing ceremony in Doha, van Beurden said European industry face taking a major hit from the energy crisis, worsened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Europe has reduced consumption “quite effectively, quite significantly” following the loss of 120 million tonnes of Russian gas a year, van Beurden said, but “a lot of this reduction is achieved by switching off industry”.
Europe has desperately searched for quick alternatives to Russian gas, but van Beurden said Europe would need large amounts of LNG for decades.read more

Another departing Shell leader seeking redemption?
By John Donovan
Departing Shell Plc CEO Ben van Beurden seems to be seeking redemption in his closing period with the energy giant.
THE GRONINGEN SCANDAL
BvB now admits that Shell should have pulled out of the controversial earthquake-blighted Groningen project operated by NAM – a Shell-Exxon joint venture company.
According to Reuters:“A damning report in 2015 from the independent Dutch Safety Board had accused the government and the field’s operators of ignoring the threat of earthquakes linked to the field for years.”
Dutch prosecutors to pursue pollution case against Shell-Exxon gas venture
By Syndicated Content Oct 12, 2022 | 7:53 AM
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) -Dutch prosecutors said on Wednesday they will pursue a pollution case against NAM, a joint venture of Shell and ExxonMobil that operates gas fields in the Netherlands.
The prosecutors “(suspect) NAM of injecting waste streams from natural gas extraction into the deep subsurface without a permit”, a statement from their office said.
Prosecutors say they believe the company took waste products from natural gas extraction in the North Sea, then processed and injected them into empty gas fields in the province of Groningen.
A spokesperson for NAM said the company would respond later on Wednesday.
Reuters reported last month that Shell And ExxonMobil have put their 50-50 venture up for sale, with expected proceeds of over $1 billion.
NAM started producing natural gas in 1963 following the discovery of the giant Groningen field, which was a major source of gas for the Netherlands and Europe for decades.
But extraction has been almost completely wound down in the past 10 years as tremors blamed on drilling damaged buildings and prompted protests by residents and campaigners.read more
Shell should have quit Groningen gas project in Netherlands earlier -CEO
AMSTERDAM, Oct 13 (Reuters) – Shell CEO Ben van Beurden told a Dutch parliamentary panel investigating problems relating to natural gas production at the large Groningen gas field in the Netherlands that the company should have pulled out of the project earlier.
Production at Groningen was scaled back sharply over a period of years in the 2010s after the Dutch government and producer NAM, a Shell-Exxon joint venture, realized the earthquakes it caused posed too great a threat to life and property.
“We had to continually ask what makes sense,” as production was dialled back to levels at which NAM made little to no profit, Van Beurden told lawmakers.
“What made sense for Shell was to quit. In any other country we would have stopped this operation. But in the Netherlands that was impossible because the Netherlands was dependent on Groningen gas.”
A damning report in 2015 from the independent Dutch Safety Board had accused the government and the field’s operators of ignoring the threat of earthquakes linked to the field for years. As vast amounts of gas were removed from under the province since 1963, the ground sank and settled above empty pockets, triggering quakes.read more

What every company should learn from Shell’s exemplary CEO succession strategy
Laurie Cure: Wed, October 5, 2022 at 4:59 PM
Global energy giant Shell recently announced that Wael Sawan, its head of integrated gas and renewables, would replace longtime CEO Ben van Beurden by the end of 2022. While important changes to the C-suite are rarely smooth sailing, Shell’s board seems to have followed the three essential characteristics of a successful succession: fast, thorough, and consistent.
In early September, Reuters reported that the board was actively working to name the next CEO upon the retirement of Van Beurden, who plans to step down in 2023 after 40 years with the company. Their sources said the board succession committee had narrowed the list down to a few candidates. Two weeks later, they confirmed the final choice.read more
Shell chief: governments may need to tax energy firms more to help the poor
Ben van Beurden also warns against EU moves to cap price of gas and electricity to protect consumers

The chief executive of Shell has said governments may need to tax energy companies further to fund efforts to protect the “poorest” people from soaring bills.
Ben van Beurden, the outgoing boss of the oil and gas company, told an energy conference in London: “One way or another there needs to be government intervention. Protecting the poorest, that probably may then mean that governments need to tax people in this room to pay for it.
“I think we just have to accept as a society – it can be done smartly and not so smartly. There is a discussion to be had about it but I think it’s inevitable.”read more
