BAGHDAD — Royal Dutch Shell says it has officially kicked off a multibillion-dollar project to tap natural gas in Iraq’s south.The $17 billion joint venture will gather, process and market associated gas, a by-product of producing oil, from three oil fields in the petroleum-rich province of Basra.

Iraq holds 51 percent in the 25-year partnership while Shell holds 44 percent and Japan’s Mitsubishi holds 5 percent. The gas will be used mainly for domestic energy needs, but there is also an option for exports. Wednesday’s announcement was published on Shell’s website. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) and Mitsubishi Corp. (8058) will start capturing gas from Iraq’s oil fields next week in a $17 billion project known as Basra Gas Co.

“Basra Gas Co. will start operations officially on April 15,” said Ali Hussain Khudayir, director general of South Gas Co., which represents the Iraqi government’s controlling stake in the Basra Gas Co. venture.

The plant will produce 400 million cubic feet (11 million cubic meters) a day from next week, climbing to 2 billion cubic feet a day by 2017, Khudayir said on March 27. The facility will capture so-called associated gas from the Zubair, Majnoon and West Qurna-1 oil fields in southern Iraq. read more

Baghdad has denied reports Royal Dutch Shell will become the latest oil major to set up shop in the autonomous Kurdish north.

“We don’t have any discussions with the Kurdish regional government [KRG] about working in the region,” a statement released by the office of Iraq’s deputy prime minister for energy quotes Hans Nijkamp, a Shell vice president, as saying.

According to the statement, Mr Nijkamp also described as “inaccurate” reports that the oil major was set to follow its competitors ExxonMobil, Total and Chevron into the autonomous north. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) said it isn’t in talks with authorities in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region about energy projects in the northern area, a government spokesman said.

Hans Nijkamp, Shell’s country chairman for Iraq, spoke during a meeting with the deputy prime minister for energy affairs, Hussain al-Shahristani, today in Baghdad, Faisal Abdullah, Shahristani’s spokesman, said in an e-mailed statement.

(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) plans to start pumping gas from its gas joint venture in southern Iraq in the next three weeks at 60 million cubic feet per day, Iraq said on Wednesday.

Shell and Mitsubishi Corporation (8058.T) signed a $17 billion deal with Iraq last November to capture flared gas at the country’s southern oilfields, which burn off more than 700 million cubic feet of gas per day.

Hans Nijkamp, Shell vice-president and head of the company’s Iraq projects, told Iraq Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Hussain al-Shahristani that output would be increased by a further 40 million cubic feet a day several weeks after pumping starts, a statement from Shahristani’s office said. read more

Searching for buried explosives inch by inch across a landmass the size of Bahrain is all part of a day’s work for Ken Portanger, Shell Iraq’s Explosive Removal team lead. Littered with mines, grenades, missiles and other deadly munitions, the Majnoon site is a stark reminder of the field’s turbulent past.

Located along the border of Iraq near Iran, Majnoon (“crazy” in Arabic) is a super major oilfield which has seen its fair share of crazy times. It was the site of major land battles during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980’s. These battles took their toll on the field’s oil production facilities, but also the neighbouring communities. Shell started work on the Majnoon field development project in early 2010.  First it had to clean the field’s explosive past, by literally sifting through the sands of time. read more

Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) said it’s speeding up work on a project to capture natural gas from oilfields in southern Iraq and that it has signed an initial agreement to develop a petrochemical plant based on ethane.

“All hands on deck to catch up with time lost” after more than a year of negotiations to sign the $17 billion gas-capture agreement ended in November, Mounir Bouaziz, Shell’s Middle East vice president for new business, said today at a conference in Istanbul.

Iraq is now flaring gas produced in association with crude oil because it lacks the infrastructure to use it as fuel for electricity plants or feedstock for the petrochemical industry. read more

Exclusive: Europe’s big buyers cut ties with Iran oil

(Reuters) – Iran’s top oil buyers in Europe are making substantial cuts in supply months in advance of European Union sanctions, reducing flows to the continent in March by more than a third – or over 300,000 barrels daily, industry sources said on Thursday.

France’s Total (TOTF.PA) has already stopped buying the crude, which is subject to European Union sanctions from July 1 and market sources say Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) has scaled back sharply. read more

Royal Dutch Shell CEO Peter Voser is reluctantly considering how best to wean Shell off the supply of blood tainted Iranian oil. Shell is one of the biggest consumers of Iranian oil – see article below.

The relationship between Shell and Iran has continued unabated for many years, while the fanatical Iranian regime has been busy using the funds generated to supply roadside bombs to kill and maim Nato soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and fund its Nuclear Bomb program. The oil revenue is crucial to Iran. Hence the sanctions and sanctions busting by Shell.

Trying to avoid the odium of its association with the mad mullahs, Shell resorted to subterfuge to disguise its shipments of Iranian crude. read more

Protests – overwhelmingly unfounded and politically unchallenged –
have trebled the cost of developing Ireland’s offshore Corrib gasfield.
This huge “political risk” will deter further such investments for a generation.

Many years ago, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, there was a Dutch company with an Irish name, Shell Teoranta BV, whose raison d’être was to seek and hopefully find oil offshore Ireland (“Teoranta” is Irish for ““Limited”).  It drilled a number of wells – for  example, on 19th December 1979, the Irish Times featured a photo of a jack-up rig drilling an exploration well just offshore Dublin – but to no avail.  All the holes were dry.  Concluding that Ireland was a lost cause, Shell Teoranta packed its bags and shut up shop, though not before claiming a huge write-off from the Dutch taxpayer for all its futile Irish expenditure, a provision of Netherlands law which explains why Shell Teoranta was registered there. Shell reckoned it had better uses for its shareholders’ money than to fritter it away on the ultra-long-shots of Irish exploration. read more

BAGHDAD — Iraq finalised a $17-billion joint venture deal with Shell and Mitsubishi to capture and process gas from its southern oil fields, at a ceremony at the oil ministry on Sunday.

The deal was signed by Shell CEO Peter Voser, Mitsubishi Vice President Tetsuro Kuwabara and Iraqi Oil Minister Abdelkarim al-Luaybi.

“Today’s event represents a big change in the oil industry,” Luaybi said, adding that the deal constitutes the best use of the gas in line with Iraq’s needs. read more

Iraq, seeking to boost power output after years of conflict and sanctions, signed the final accord for a $17 billion project with Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSA) to capture natural gas at oil fields.

Shell Chief Executive Officer Peter Voser and Oil Minister Abdul Kareem Al-Luaibi signed the agreement to produce gas that is currently flared off at fields in southern Iraq, in a ceremony today in Baghdad.

Under the 25-year agreement, the government will hold a 51 percent stake in a venture called South Gas Co., while Shell will have 44 percent. Mitsubishi Corp. (8058) is also a partner in the project and will hold the rest. South Gas will help collect more than 2 billion cubic feet (57 million cubic meters) of fuel a day at the Rumailah, Zubair and West Qurna fields in southern Iraq, Deputy Oil Minister Ahmad al-Shamaa said Nov. 16. read more

BAGHDAD—The Iraqi oil ministry could ask Royal Dutch Shell PLC to develop Iraq’s supergiant West Qurna Phase 1 oil field in southern Iraq, if the government decides to terminate Exxon Mobil Corp.’s contract after it signed a deal to explore for oil in the Kurdish region of the country, a senior Iraqi oil official said Monday.

“We have many options,” said Abdul Mahdy al-Ameedi, head of the ministry’s petroleum contracts and licensing directorate, when asked what the ministry would do if the West Qurna 1 oil field contract with ExxonMobil is canceled. read more
