Thousands of Groningen gas opponents demand earthquake damage compensation
SUNDAY, JANUARY 16, 2022
An estimated eight to ten thousand people in Groningen took part in a torchlight procession against gas extraction in the province. The municipality was satisfied with the protest, which drew attention to the people living in the earthquake area.
The protest was organized in response to the Cabinet’s decision to double gas production. Protesters were also upset at the poor organization of subsidies for homeowners to strengthen their homes and make them more sustainable. read more

Dutch gas firm NAM will for the time being not pay profits to its two shareholders – Shell and ExxonMobil, Shell announced in a press release. NAM has 18 billion euros available to compensate for damaged caused by gas extraction related earthquakes in Groningen for the next five years, the Dutch gas firm also announced in a press release.
These two press releases were an attempt to calm unrest caused by the revelation that Shell withdrew its so-called 403 declaration from NAM last year, as Trouw reported on Saturday. This 403 declaration held Shell liable for NAM’s debts. The withdrawal of this declaration, which happened in June last year, raised concerns that Shell is trying to escape its liability for damages caused by fracking earthquakes in Groningen. read more

Wednesday’s decision was met with jubilation from Groningen citizens, many of whom have seen their houses damaged by the thousands of small earthquakes triggered by the gas extraction.
By Bart H. Meijer: NOVEMBER 15, 2017
THE HAGUE, Nov 15 (Reuters) – The highest Dutch administrative court has rejected the government’s plan to cap production at a major gas field that has caused damaging earthquakes, saying it might be possible to cut output further without endangering supplies.
The decision adds another chapter to the long fight over gas production in the northern Dutch province of Groningen, where citizens accuse the government of endangering their lives while protecting gas revenues. read more

According to reports, an advertising standards board in the Netherlands will formally censure Exxon and Shell, as part-owners of a Dutch petroleum company, for advertising the claim that natural gas is “the cleanest of all fossil fuels.” The ad campaign featuring this claim ran earlier this year. Just two months ago, the agency also admonished Statoil for making the claim that natural gas was a “low emissions fuel” and for calling it “clean energy.” As The Guardian reported: “The Dutch watchdog waived punitive action against the NAM company, which is part-owned by Shell and Exxon, in that light. The economic benefits of the gas produced by Groningen have been immense, but now some of the costs are becoming apparent. Rebuilding thousands of homes, and increasing the height of the dikes which protect Holland from flooding will be enormously costly – perhaps comparable to the Macondo disaster in the Gulf of Mexico that drove BP to the financial brink.

On Monday 16 December a Dutch public service TV channel, NCRV, aired a documentary about natural gas drilling in Northwest Groningen by NAM, a joint venture company owned by Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil.
The drilling is causing increasingly violent earthquakes.
A former engineer predicted in October 2013 that major earthquakes will soon occur.
“It’s only a matter of time before people will be injured or even die because of the earthquakes that afflict North Groningen says Adriaan Houtenbos in the NRC Handelsblad today.” (Translation)

The residents of two small Dutch towns are to play host to an unconventional neighbour: massive quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2). Royal Dutch Shell and NAM, the Dutch national gas company, intend to conduct a pilot scheme to investigate CO2 storage. Where will they put it? Under the towns.
