Shell Chief Says World to Face 40 Percent Water-Supply Shortfall

Friday, June 10, 2011

June 10 (Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch Shell Plc Chief Executive Officer Peter Voser said global demand for fresh water may outstrip supply by 40 percent in 20 years.

Shell, together with the International Energy Agency and World Business Council for Sustainable Development, is conducting research on water use in the energy industry, Voser said yesterday in London. The Hague-based company has begun using water recycling technologies at its ventures in Brazil and other operations. read more

Shell’s S. Africa Shale Plan Should Be Halted, Lawyers Say

April 6 (Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s application to start shale-gas exploration in South Africa’s Karoo region should be terminated because it lacks sufficient information for regulators to assess it properly, Havemann Inc. attorneys said.

Shell, planning to drill about 24 wells in an area of about 90,000 square kilometers (34,749 square miles), faces opposition to its proposed hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking, in the sheep and game farming region, an arid stretch across northwest South Africa, from the Treasure the Karoo Action Group, which has 3,000 supporters and commissioned Havemann to compile the report. read more

If the claim survives the expected legal challenges, Shell will use that water to extract and process shale oil. But focusing on the Yampa misses a larger point. Shell and other companies, including Chevron and EGL Resources, have been collecting water rights on the Colorado and White rivers for decades in hope of exploiting the shale deposits beneath Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. read more

Oil market manipulation alleged

A Shell spokeswoman said Friday that while her company was no longer shipping oil to the refinery, other oil suppliers were free to use the pipeline. In addition, the refinery draws crude from another pipeline not owned by Shell, said spokeswoman Alison Chassin. Flying J owes Shell money for crude already delivered to the plant, an amount she said was in the "tens of millions" of dollars.
