ABC News Australia: Shell, Qld Govt forge ‘clean coal’ research partnership

Saturday 18 June 2005

The Queensland Government has formed a research alliance with global oil giant Shell to develop clean coal technology and power.

Premier Peter Beattie met with senior Shell executives in New York yesterday, where they agreed to work together in the study.

Mr Beattie says the Government’s Stanwell Corporation is trying to capture coal as a competitively priced source of energy, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions to near-zero levels.

“Shell will work alongside Stanwell’s existing team of experts to deliver,” he said.

“It means we will be making coal a long term proposition for Queensland.”

The Premier says the state has 300 years supply of coal.

“It will mean that we will be able to sell it indefinitely to the world market, there won’t be concerns about environmental things, it will help us reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

“And this, more than anything else, is a 100-year vision for energy.”
