Emigrant Online (Ireland): No move on Shell dispute

“The latest protest in support of the Rossport Five took place in Galway on Saturday when an estimated 1,000 people marched through the city to attend a rally at Spanish Arch.”

On Monday Shell announced that it would dismantle almost three kilometres of pipeline which it had welded together before receiving ministerial consent. Later the company announced plans to lay off a further 128 workers now that work on the Corrib gas pipeline has come to a halt. The redundancies are in addition to 91 workers already laid off in recent weeks

The five Mayo men jailed for their refusal to obey a High Court order not to obstruct the construction of the controversial pipeline remain in prison, with no end to the impasse in sight. Their relatives and supporters converged on Castlebar when the issue was due to be discussed by Mayo County Council. On the advice of council officials, the elected councillors voted 13-9 to reject a motion urging Shell to locate the gas terminal offshore. Legal advisors suggested that, had the motion been passed, the local authority could have found itself involved in costly legal action. The deputy county manager also said the passing of such a motion would make it difficult to attract further investment to the county.
