Oireachtas committee: The Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey, has said that Shell E&P is expected to begin work next week on dismantling part of the controversial Corrib gas pipeline that was welded together without proper consent.

In a three-hour hearing before the Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Mr Dempsey also criticised the Shell to Sea campaign against the pipeline, claiming that its main aim was not the safety of people living beside the pipeline, but a general opposition to the exploitation of offshore gas fields by private companies. read more

Aramco Shell jv consider plan to boost output of Motiva refinery

Financial Times: ENERGY: “Aramco, the Saudi kingdom’s national oil company, is considering a plan to boost the output of its Motiva refinery in Houston by 45 per cent, along with its joint venture partner, Shell.”: “This summer, Jeroen Van der Veer, Shell’s chief executive, commented that he did not see any tankers of crude sitting idle for want of refining capacity.”

When British protesters angered by the country’s high fuel prices threatened to blockade oil refineries earlier this month, Gordon Brown, the chancellor of the exchequer, pointed the finger in a familiar direction: the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. The only way to bring down prices, he declared, was by putting pressure on the oil cartel to step up production.

Opec promptly called his bluff, proposing to make available another 2m barrels of oil a day – if consumers wanted it. “We’re offering everything in our pocket and this is my message to Gordon Brown: if he would like to have it, I would be happy to sell it to him,” said Sheikh Ahmad Fahad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Opec’s president. The announcement had a limited effect on prices. As Sheikh Al-Sabah well knew, even if Opec were suddenly able to double its output of crude, it would not be going anywhere. There simply would not be enough capacity to refine the oil into a usable form. read more

Iran threatens economic backlash over IAEA vote

Financial Times: Iran threatens economic backlash over IAEA vote

“…European pressure over Iran’s nuclear programme was putting at risk multi-billion dollar energy deals with oil majors, including Total and Royal Dutch Shell.”

Iran said on Tuesday it would reconsider economic ties with countries that voted against it at last week’s board meeting of the UN atomic watchdog.

Hamid Reza Asefi, foreign ministry spokesman, said Tehran was particularly surprised by the vote against it from India, which has recently agreed to to import 5m metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually from Iran via a gas pipeline project linking the two countries.

Tehran in June signed a $22bn liquefied natural gas deal with India, under which a consortium will purchase 5m tonnes of LNG a year for 25 years from 2010. read more

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 28 (Xinhuanet) — The solar-power industry needed stability to become competitive, the Vice President of Royal Dutch Shell’s Hydrogen Business Jeremy Bentham said here on Wednesday.

Jeremy Bentham told the World Petroleum Congress in Johannesburg: “The solar industry needs stable markets. With fair and good incentives we can have solar power competitive in ten year’s time.”

He said over the course of time different companies gave different incentives to get markets moving, and that these incentives changed, upsetting the industry. read more

Project delays ‘drive up prices’

Financial Times: Project delays ‘drive up prices’: “Royal Dutch Shell, Europe’s second largest energy group by market capitalisation, this year made headlines with delays at its Sakhalin oil and natural gas project off Russia’s east coast and its Bonga oilfield in Nigeria.”

Tuesday 27 September 2005

By Carola Hoyos in London

Delays of big oil projects are helping to drive oil prices higher as energy companies become increasingly unreliable at delivering production from new oilfields on time, a recent analysts’ report has warned.

Oil production in 2007 will be 2m barrels a day less than expected because companies are increasingly having to delay the date at which their projects deliver their first barrels of oil, according to Sanford Bernstein, an international research group. read more

Govt rules out mediator in Shell dispute

Ireland Online: Govt rules out mediator in Shell dispute

“Natural Resources Minister Noel Dempsey today faced a three-hour grilling on the issue…”: “Mr Dempsey also rejected claims that former ministers with responsibility for natural resources had any improper influence on awarding exploration contracts to oil giants like Shell.”

Tuesday 27/09/2005

The Government tonight ruled out hiring a mediator to break the deadlock in the Rossport Five dispute with Shell over an inshore gas pipeline.

The Co Mayo landowners were jailed in Cloverhill Prison in late June for ignoring a High Court order to stop blocking construction on the Corrib Gas Development Project.

Natural Resources Minister Noel Dempsey today faced a three-hour grilling on the issue before an often angry all-party Oireachtas Committee.

But Mr Dempsey ruled out a suggestion by Fine Gael TD Bernard Durkan to appoint a mediator to broker agreement between the Rossport Five and Shell executives. read more

Shell farcical No. 2 ranking in 2005 Accountability Rating in FORTUNE magazine

Royal Dutch Shell farcical No. 2 ranking in the 2005 “Accountability Rating” published in FORTUNE magazine

Tuesday 27 September 2005 08.15am ET

By Alfred and John Donovan

27 Sept 2005

How much faith can investors/stakeholders have in a rating methodology capable of conjuring up a ranking which has no relationship to reality?

Royal Dutch/Shell Group is No. 2 in the rankings of the 2005 “Accountability Rating” announced on 22nd September in Fortune magazine. This is a rating on corporate responsibility of the prestigious FORTUNE Global 100 companies. The Accountability Rating is apparently not a measure of how good or bad a company is, but supposedly how smart. It follows that by removing or diminishing the ethical dimension in a corporate rating assessment, a bad company can be made to look good. read more

No resolution to Shell dispute

Irish Emigrant Online (Ireland): No resolution to Shell dispute

“Earlier in the week it was reported that Shell has yet to comply with July’s ministerial order to dismantle a section of the Corrib Gas pipeline which had been welded together without the proper Government consent.”

Monday 26 September 2005

The Rossport Five remain in Cloverhill Prison while the war of words continues between the Shell Oil company and their supporters.

Opponents of the gas processing station in northwest Mayo took their battle to Norway, the home of Statoil which has a 37% stake in the Corrib gas field. During their visit independent TD Dr Jerry Cowley and relatives of the Rossport Five were told by Statoil’s senior vice-president, Helge Hatlestad, “Statoil would never embark on such a project without taking sufficient safety considerations. We are fully confident in the safety of the pipeline and the project”. A local Labour MP, however, said, “We cannot have such a big company having an argument with our friends in Ireland”. Tore Nordton also said that in Norway such conflicts were avoided through close consultation with the local community and by dealing with safety issues before the planning stage. On his return to Dublin Dr Cowley described the visit as a great success as it had received widespread coverage in the Norwegian media. read more

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – The long-delayed Bonga oilfield in Nigeria is now expected to start production in late October, quickly reaching 100,000 barrels per day (bpd), energy major Royal Dutch Shell said on Monday.

Shell had previously said Bonga, which is over two years behind its original target start date and far above budget, would begin pumping in the fourth quarter.

Irish farmers’ arrest instigates protesting

Daily Herald (Utah): Irish farmers’ arrest instigates protesting

Sunday 25 September 2005

ROSSPORT, Ireland — Five farmers from these wind-swept coastal boglands have been locked up in a Dublin prison for nearly three months for blocking construction of a $1.1 billion natural gas pipeline and refinery by the Shell oil group, a standoff that has forced suspension of the largest energy project in Irish history.

The imprisonment of the group known here as the Rossport Five, which includes a 65-year-old former schoolteacher, has sparked protest marches across Ireland and an emotional debate about the pace and balance of economic development in a once-poor county that has become one of Europe’s greatest success stories. read more

Militants threaten Nigerian oil stations after leader’s arrest

The Guardian (UK): Militants threaten Nigerian oil stations after leader’s arrest

“We will unleash upon the government and its cohorts violence and mayhem never before reported in the history of the Nigerian state…”

Saturday September 24, 2005

Jeevan Vasagar in Nairobi

A separatist militia threatening to spread “violence and mayhem” throughout Nigeria’s oil-producing delta has forced the closure of two oil installations and the evacuation of dozens of workers.

The US firm Chevron shut down a station pumping 19,000 barrels a day yesterday after being warned of an “imminent threat” from armed militants.

A day earlier more than 100 fighters stormed another Chevron oil platform, disarming government security personnel and shutting down the facility, which pumped around 8,000 barrels a day. Shell, which produces about half the oil from Nigeria, withdrew 50 workers from three facilities on Thursday, but output was maintained by a skeleton staff. The unrest adds to pressure on oil prices, already approaching historic highs because of Hurricane Katrina in the US. read more
