RTE News: Shell proposes new Corrib pipeline routes

Tuesday, 12 June 2007 19:42

Up to eight alternative routes for the Corrib Gas pipeline were to be outlined today in an attempt to break the deadlock in Co Mayo.

But opponents of the project, who were involved in a serious confrontation yesterday evening with construction sub-contractors and gardaí, said it is going to be extremely difficult to see how any agreement could be reached with Shell Ireland.

The latest incident took place at Pollatomish Pier when locals and members of the Shell to Sea campaign group attempted to prevent contractors from erecting a security cabin at the pier.

The cabin would be used by a survey boat undertaking a seabed study as part of Shell Ireland’s attempts to find new routes for the pipeline.

The proposed pipeline would link Shell Ireland’s offshore well to a planned €200m refinery at Bellanaboy.

Gardaí and protestors clashed for over an hour.

A leading member of the Shell to Sea campaign was arrested, but was later released.

Campaign spokesman PJ Moran said the clashes were some of the worst in recent times and it appeared that the gardaí were once again being used by Shell Ireland.

He said it was farcical for the company to look for public support for the new routes when it was still trying to impose its will on local people.

Later today details of the alternative routes will be revealed and the company will invite the public to comment on them.

Five local men were jailed for three months in 2005 because of their opposition to the original route. and its sister websites,,,,, and are all owned by John Donovan. There is also a Wikipedia article.
