OSLO, Nov 28 (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L: Quote, Profile , Research) will take over as operator of the Ormen Lange gas field in the Norwegian Sea on Dec. 1, development phase operator StatoilHydro (STL.OL: Quote, Profile , Research) said on Wednesday.

Ormen Lange, on stream from October, can produce enough gas to cover 20 percent of Britain’s needs. It is linked to the UK through the world’s longest subsea pipeline across the North Sea.

“As operator for the development since 1999, it is a delight to state that it has gone according to plan,” said Morten Ruud, StatoilHydro’s executive vice president for projects.

“Production has good regularity and everything is working satisfactorily,” Ruud said in a statement.

The handover of the operatorship is according to plan.

The decision to share the operatorship was taken by the Norwegian Petroleum and Energy Ministry in 1999 in an effort to get more oil majors into key roles on the Norwegian shelf.

“The partnership has worked well in operational phase preparations between the developer and the operations organisation,” Ivar Helge Hollen, Norske Shell’s head of operations for Ormen Lange, said in a statement.

The Ormen Lange partners are Shell with a 17.04 percent interest, StatoilHydro with 28.91 percent, Norwegian state-owned Petoro with 36.48 percent, Danish DONG with 10.34 percent and ExxonMobil (XOM.N: Quote, Profile , Research) with 7.23 percent.
