Nigeria: Mosop in Solidarity Procession Over Shell Sack

This Day (Lagos)

Ahamefula Ogbu
Port Harcourt

Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), yesterday marched through the streets of Port-Harcourt, to support the Federal Government’s move to pull Shell Petroleum Development Company out of Ogoniland.

The procession, which started from Boro Park, Mile 1, proceeded peacefully to the main gate of the new Government House, where they stormed with placards.

Some of the placards carried by the Ogoni youths numbering about 600 read, “Non-violence pays, bye bye to Shell, no more Shell in Ogoniland, Justice for Ogoni, Justice for all, thank you President Yar’Adua, no more genocide in Ogoniland.”

President of MOSOP who led the peaceful procession in a message of solidarity to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, expressed joy over the decision to send Shell packing from their land, and pledged more constructive and developmental roles in improving the environment.

Receiving the solidarity message on behalf of Governor Chibuike Amaechi, Secretary to the State Government, Mr Magnus Abe, commended their non-violent approach to addressing issues, adding that their agitations and prices have been rewarded.

“As usual the Ogonis have blazed the trail, the Niger Delta thing everybody is talking about is nothing but an extension of the Ogoni struggle, but the violence that has come with it is a bastardisation of the Ogoni struggle,” Abbey said.
