Nigeria: Shell recruits 4,000 to protect oil pipelines

Sunday July 06th 2008

Nigeria’s subsidiary of oil major Shell has recruited 4,000 people to help protect its network of oil pipelines in the country’s oil producing Niger Delta region, company officials said.

The manager of pipeline operations in the Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC), Mr. Godwin Idoko, said the people would provide intelligence reports to the company, which will then forward such to security agencies to prevent the incessant vandalisation of the firm’s pipelines.

The vandalisation of SPDC’s 7,500km pipelines, which stretches across 600 communities in the Niger Delta, by militants and aggrieved youths has affected the company’s oil production and export.

Idoko said the newly-recruited people would not carry arms, perhaps in a move to avoid confrontation between them and the militants.
