Nigerian militants claim another bombing

Nigeria’s main militant group says it has bombed another oil pipeline in the restive south.

If confirmed, the attack would mark a sixth straight day of stepped-up violence in Africa’s oil giant.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta said in a statement that it used high explosives to destroy the conduit run by a unit of Royal Dutch Shell PLC.

Shell officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

The latest run of violence in three years of chaos in Nigeria’s southern oil region began when the military launched a rare offensive attack on Saturday against a militant camp with ground and air forces.

Normally, the militants and military steer clear of each other.

The militants have retaliated with raids on soldiers guarding oil installations and with sabotage on the pipelines that carry crude from wells to export terminals.

The militants have declared an “oil war” in the Niger Delta, where militants demanding more oil-industry funds from the federal government have stepped up attacks.

About 40 per cent of Nigeria’s normal daily oil production is now offline, severely curtailing exports from Africa’s oil giant.
