Shell says Russia exit has already cost $5 billion

LONDON (AP) — Shell says its decision to pull out of Russia in response to the country’s invasion of Ukraine has already cost the international energy giant as much as $5 billion.

The reduced value of Russian assets, credit losses and “onerous” contract terms will cut earnings for the first three months of the year by between $4 billion and $5 billion, London-based Shell said Thursday. The estimate was part of an update released before publication of complete first-quarter earnings on May 5. read more

Shell sorry and pledges to stop buying Russian oil

Shell has pledged to stop buying oil from Russia as it apologised for its purchase of cheap Russian crude at the weekend.

The energy giant also said it would close all its service stations in the country and stop all current work in the country.

Shell came under huge criticism at the weekend after it purchased a cargo of Russian crude at a discounted price.

Its boss said on Tuesday, however, that it was wrong to buy Russian oil.

“We are acutely aware that our decision last week to purchase a cargo of Russian crude oil… was not the right one and we are sorry,” Mr van Beurden said. read more

Shell has pledged to donate any profits it makes from discounted Russian oil to a Ukrainian disaster relief fund, following stinging criticism of its decision to keep buying tankers of crude as war rages.

Shell broke ranks with Western traders on Friday when it bought Russian crude for $28.50 a barrel less than the Dated Brent benchmark for physical oil, saving millions of pounds at a time when global prices are surging. read more

Jessica Uhl cites ‘family reasons’ as she steps down

The respected finance chief who oversaw Shell’s historic relocation to London is leaving the company after almost two decades, having decided moving her own family to the UK long-term is “not sustainable”.

Mother-of-three Jessica Uhl, who has held finance roles in London, Houston and The Hague since joining the oil super-major from Enron in 2004, will step down as CFO on March 31.

Uhl will be replaced by Sinead Gorman, a civil engineer by background who joined Shell in 1999 and steps up from her role as head of finance of its global upstream business. She will be based in London full-time. read more

The Board of Shell plc (“Shell”) today announced its intention to exit its joint ventures with Gazprom and related entities, including its 27.5 percent stake in the Sakhalin-II liquefied natural gas facility, its 50 percent stake in the Salym Petroleum Development and the Gydan energy venture. Shell also intends to end its involvement in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project.

“We are shocked by the loss of life in Ukraine, which we deplore, resulting from a senseless act of military aggression which threatens European security,” said Shell’s chief executive officer, Ben van Beurden. read more

Shell has pledged to sever ties with the Kremlin by exiting its joint ventures with the Russian state-backed energy colossus Gazprom.

The oil giant said it will end its tie-up with Gazprom by selling its 27.5pc stake in the Sakhalin 2 liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant and will stop working on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, which Germany put on ice earlier this month.

Shell’s Russian assets were valued at $3bn at the end of last year. read more

OIL GIANT BP has announced that they will be offloading their stake in a Russian state-owned oil company in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

The massive oil company has announced that it will be offloading its 19.75 percent stake in Russian state-owned oil company Rosneft.

BP Chairman Helge Lund said: “Russia’s attack on Ukraine is an act of aggression which is having tragic consequences across the region.”

It has led the bp board to conclude, after a thorough process, that our involvement with Rosneft, a state-owned enterprise, simply cannot continue.

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said he had left BP’s boss with “no doubt about the seriousness of government concerns about BP’s overexposure to Russian interests” after a meeting on Friday, according to an official. read more

BP has been forced to cut ties with the Kremlin-controlled energy giant Rosneft as it fuels Vladimir Putin’s assault on Ukraine.

The FTSE 100 oil giant will offload its 20pc stake in Rosneft, previously valued at $14bn (£10bn), and abandon its two seats on the board following pressure from the Government.

Bernard Looney, its chief executive, will step down from Rosneft’s board, as will Bob Dudley, the former BP boss, as it exits a three-decade venture in Russia. read more

BP is to offload its 19.75% stake in Russian state-owned oil firm Rosneft after Russia’s “act of aggression in Ukraine”.

The oil giant had come under pressure from the UK government to make the move since Thursday’s invasion.

It has held the shareholding in the Russian company since 2013.

BP chief executive Bernard Looney has resigned “with immediate effect” from the Rosneft board, as has fellow BP-nominated director Bob Dudley. read more

Nord Stream 2, as it’s called, fuels worries in the U.S. and other countries that the link could give the Kremlin new leverage over Germany and other NATO allies. As the project neared completion, U.S. sanctions and calls for European restrictions, as well as a Polish move to fine Russia’s Gazprom PJSC on antitrust grounds, have left the construction in limbo and ratcheted up political tensions.

1. What is Nord Stream 2?

It’s a 1,230-kilometer (764-mile) gas pipeline that will double the capacity of the existing undersea route from Russian fields to Europe — the original Nord Stream — which opened in 2011. Gazprom owns the joint Russian-European venture, with Royal Dutch Shell Plc and four other investors contributing half of the 9.5 billion-euro ($11.2 billion) cost. Initially expected to come online by the end of 2019, the link has been delayed by U.S. sanctions that forced Swiss contractor Allseas Group SA to withdraw its pipelaying vessels. The pipeline operator is looking for solutions to lay the remaining 6% of the pipe, which includes construction work in Denmark’s waters. read more
