A letter describing Vince Cable as the “contact minister for Shell” has raised fresh questions about the business secretary’s relationship with the oil giant. Vince Cable’s ties to Shell are rather more extensive than suggested by the various newspaper reports and Wikipedia articles.

While at London Business School in the early 1990’s, I attended a lecture given by Vince Cable on “Scenario Planning” which included many slides from his work at Shell and was given the impression that he had been working with Shell as an economist for much longer than suggested by the two years as “Chief Economist” which is widely cited.

In fact, from 1990 Vince worked for Shell International and in 1995 became Shell’s Chief Economist.
