A Shell internal email circulated yesterday notified Shell employees in Malaysia of the tragic death of a Shell contractor who collapsed during an emergency drill exercise which was held in the control room of an offshore platform, located in Sarawak waters.

Shell Exploration and Production official Wee Yiaw Hin circulated the email of 13 July 2005 entitled: Death Offshore Sarawak. He expressed “profound regret” and advised that the immediate efforts to try to revive the unnamed Shell contractor were unsuccessful and the individual was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The emergency drill exercise which ended in such unfortunate circumstances took place on the evening of Tuesday 12 July. There is likely to be a call for an official inquiry on health and safety grounds as it is unusual for a death to occur during an emergency drill exercise.
