Shell Nigeria Bomu-Bonny Oil Pipeline On Fire – Sources

Sunday April 12nd, 2009 / 10h44

LONDON -(Dow Jones)- A manifold at Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s (RDSB.LN) Bomu-Bonny oil pipeline in Nigeria caught fire early Sunday morning, according to an eyewitness.

“Around 3 a.m. local time, there was an eruption from the Bomu manifold” next to the K.Dere community in Ogoniland, the person said, backed by another person familiar with the local situation. “We can see the fire. Shell has moved in firefighters,” the person added.

The manifold is located on the Bomu-Bonny Trans-Niger pipeline, which normally carries 150,000 barrels a day. It is unclear if oil transit has been disrupted by the fire.

A Shell spokesman in Nigeria said “we have no knowledge of this,” and a Shell spokesman in the Netherlands couldn’t immediately comment.

Oil facilities in Ogoni, like in many locations in the Niger Delta, are frequently suffering from crude theft and sabotage.

He said the fire appeared to come “from a ruptured pipe because it is… 30-year-old.”
