FORMER interface manager of Shell Production Development Company (SPDC), Chief Chidi Adebanya, is not being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for any offence, his lawyers have said.

The declaration is a blunt rebuttal of news report that he (Adebanya) was to be arraigned for alleged N7 billion tax evasion.

In a statement, his lawyer, Okey Obikeze, described the report as “false and mendacious.” He was reacting to a news story published in The Guardian on Monday, February 1, 2016.

Obikezie said the story created a wrong impression of his client to his family members, friends and business associates.

The lawyer debunked the story, emphasising: “We state humbly but stoutly that it is not true that our client is being prosecuted at the Federal High Court 6, or at any other court in a N7 billion tax evasion scam in Gabaran Ubie Integrated Oil Gas project in Bayelsa State or elsewhere.”

Obikeze observed that immediately after the news report, ‘President Muhammadu Buhari described the Judiciary as his major headache in his administration’s campaign against corruption and the need to have a strong and supportive Judiciary for effective campaign against corruption.’
