Bloomberg: From Texas to Tokyo, Global LNG Poised for Terrible Year

Stephen Stapczynski, Anna Shiryaevskaya and Naureen S. Malik. Bloomberg

(Bloomberg) — Liquefied natural gas prices are poised to test record lows this year thanks to an onslaught of supply and warmer temperatures, throwing up risks and opportunities for the producers, buyers and traders behind the world’s fastest-growing fossil fuel.

The startup of new export projects from Australia to the U.S. has flooded the market, while brimming stockpiles in Europe and an expected slowdown in Chinese demand have dumped cold water on consumption prospects. LNG for spot delivery to North Asia is on track to hit an all-time low this summer, while gas prices in Europe and the U.S. are trading at the weakest seasonal levels since 1999. read more

Reuters: Italy tax police search offices of Eni managers in obstruction probe: sources

JANUARY 23, 2020 / 10:12 PM

MILAN (Reuters) – Italian tax police searched the Milan offices of three managers at Eni (ENI.MI) on Thursday to widen an investigation into suspected obstruction of justice by officials at the Italian oil group, two sources said.

The inquiry is still in an early phase and has been overshadowed by an ongoing corruption trial centering on the 2011 purchase of a Nigerian oilfield by Eni and oil major Royal Dutch Shell Plc (RDSa.L).

Milan prosecutors opened the obstruction case in 2018 to investigate whether in 2015 and 2016 Eni officials had sought to discredit two independent board members who later became witnesses in the Nigeria case. read more

OilPrice.com: Behind Closed Doors: Big Oil Talks Broader Emission Cuts

By Tsvetana Paraskova – Jan 22, 2020, 2:00 PM CST

Several of the world’s largest oil companies talked behind closed doors on Wednesday about the potential adoption of more stringent emission reduction targets that could include emissions from the products they sell to end consumers, sources with knowledge of the matter told Bloomberg.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, where climate change and the urgency to act has taken center stage this year, the top executives of oil companies Chevron, BP, Shell, Total, and Saudi Aramco, among others,  met to discuss whether the industry should start accounting for and drafting emission reduction targets not only for their respective oil production, but also for emissions ‘at the pump’, or the emissions from the fuels they sell. read more

The green revolution is inevitable

Nicholas Tucker, Columnist:

As the fight against climate change continues, it gets easy to view the issue as a direct two-sided conflict. It seems to be the idea of many that fossil fuel companies are trying to keep oil, coal and other nonrenewable resources, which have been the mainstay of the American power network, firmly in place at the top of energy production. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case. The real fight isn’t over whether or not the world goes green, it’s about when it does and who gets to hold or gain power in the revolutionized world that is fast-approaching. The green revolution is inevitable. read more

Bloomberg: Oil CEOs at Davos debate tougher CO2 cuts as pressure mounts

The bosses of some of the world’s biggest oil companies discussed adopting much more ambitious carbon targets at a closed-door meeting in Davos, a sign of how much pressure they’re under from activists and investors to address climate change.

The meeting, part of a World Economic Forum dominated by climate issues, included a debate on widening the industry’s target to include reductions in emissions from the fuels they sell, not just the greenhouse gases produced by their own operations, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. read more

The Motley Fool: Ethical investors can avoid energy stocks, but should they?

James J. McCombie | Wednesday, 22nd January, 2020

There is plenty of evidence that human activity is causing climate change and the Global Risks Report 2020 from the World Economic Forum has revealed that it is the number one long-term concern of the interviewed stakeholders.

Willingness to do more to safeguard the environment, particularly encouraging the slashing of emissions seems to be growing among the investment community.

BlackRock, a US-based global investment manager, will be offering more sustainable investment funds, and some individual investors globally are shunning the shares of polluters. Putting your capital in ‘green’ companies supports the efforts of those firms to make a difference and could mean that ‘dirty’ companies change their ways in response, or suffer if they do not change. read more

Real reasons Trump left the Paris Climate Summit?

Letter to the editor published by the News Tribune

Jan 22, 2020

From Mike Barnhill

Ashland

Dear Editor:

Time Magazine’s recent article on “Can the oil-and-gas industry survive the climate-change fall-out?” may explain why President Trump left the Paris Climate Summit.

The Netherlands oil giant, Royal Dutch Shell, is the country’s biggest business. As oil flirts with the prospect of decline, Shell is diversifying by expanding its plastics business and diversifying into electrical power. Some firms such as America’s ExxonMobil, are positioning themselves to squeeze the last lucrative years from the oil economy while attempting to convince shareholders that they will be able to sell all their oil. read more

Vanguard: FG files 42-count charge against Adoke, AGIP, Shell over Malabu oil scam

By Ikechukwu Nnochiri: JAN 21, 2020

The Federal Government, on Monday, slammed a fresh 42-count charge against the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, SAN, over alleged fraud in the $1.1billon Malabu oil deal.

Adoke, who served as AGF under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, was arrested upon his return to the country from Dubai, United Arab Emirate, on December 19, 2019.

He went on self-exile shortly after ex-President Jonathan lost his re-election bid in 2015, but was arrested and detained in Dubai by the INTERPOL on November 11. read more

Harassed to pay a bill 3 days earlier than it’s actually due

I have an energy bill that is due 24th of January, however today (21st of January) I’m getting an SMS from this hideous company telling me to pay my bill already. The message says that the bill payment is due. Seriously? I was getting this before, but this is a new “record”… 3 days before the bill is due … STOP HARASSING ME.

Terrible Customer Service

First utility was an excellent company. Since they went over to Shell the customer service has gone rapidly downhill.

They have their business model completely wrong. Isn’t it interesting how they have a member of staff responding to each of these reviews yet they have no staff available to actually deal with customer’s queries? Something very wrong there. read more

E&E NEWS: Meet America’s new superpolluters: Plastic plants

Benjamin Storrow, E&E News reporter

A recent study identified 88 petrochemical projects along the Gulf Coast that are either in the planning stage or under construction. If all are completed, their combined emissions output could reach 150.8 million metric tons, the equivalent of 38 coal plants.

The same oil and gas boom that helped clean up the power sector has also made it cheaper to turn natural gas into plastics, fertilizer and other products. The process is emissions-intensive. Large quantities of natural gas liquids like ethane and propane are fed into enormous furnaces and heated to extremely high temperatures, creating smaller hydrocarbon molecules that can be separated and turned into different plastic products. read more
