Who Needs Clean Air When You Can Have Plastic?
Great news, everyone! If you live near Shell’s monstrous petrochemical complex in western Pennsylvania, you now have a fun new website to track the toxins floating through your air! That’s right—thanks to Shell repeatedly violating its air pollution permit (because following basic environmental laws is just too much to ask), a local advocacy group has launched a real-time air monitoring project to let residents know exactly what kind of filth they’re breathing in.
The Beaver County Marcellus Awareness Community (BCMAC) has introduced “Eyes on Air”, a website displaying data from five new air monitors placed near Shell’s plastic-churning nightmare in Monaca, Pennsylvania. The monitors continuously track particulate matter, benzene, toluene, and other delightful air pollutants, giving residents real-time insights on whether it’s safe to step outside—or if today’s air is best enjoyed through a gas mask.
And guess who funded this little transparency initiative? Shell, of course! Not out of corporate goodwill, mind you, but as a pathetic PR Band-Aid on a $10 million pollution fine. Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) slapped Shell with a penalty after it exceeded air quality standards (again) and had to hand over $5 million for community projects. Given that Shell made over $28 billion in profits last year, that’s less of a punishment and more of a rounding error.
Welcome to Shell’s Chemical Wonderland
For those blissfully unaware, Shell’s monstrous petrochemical facility doesn’t just pump out single-use plastics that clog oceans and destroy ecosystems—it also dumps pollutants into the air of people who had the misfortune of living nearby. The complex converts fracked ethane gas into polyethylene nurdles, the tiny plastic pellets used to make everything from shopping bags to water bottles to microplastics currently floating in your bloodstream.
But hey, what’s a little pollution, right? According to Shell’s biggest investors—like BlackRock and Vanguard—it’s just the cost of doing business. Never mind that Beaver County already has a long history of industrial pollution, with steel plants and chemical factories helping the region earn a “C” grade from the American Lung Association for particulate matter pollution. That’s right—Shell has somehow made the air quality worse in a place already choking on industrial fumes.
And what does that mean for the locals? Asthma, COPD, cardiovascular disease, and an increased risk of cancer, just to name a few highlights. Over 13,500 adults and 3,100 children with asthma live in Beaver County, alongside thousands more suffering from lung and heart conditions. But hey, as long as the shareholders are happy, right?
Air Pollution: Now Available in Real-Time!
To help people cope with their unwanted participation in Shell’s pollution experiment, the Eyes on Air monitors will update air quality data in real-time—unlike Shell’s legally required fenceline monitoring, which collects pollution data but conveniently doesn’t provide it to the public until later. After all, why give people the information they need to protect themselves when you can just bury the data in reports no one reads?
BCMAC’s new tool allows residents to:
✅ Check if it’s safe to go outside without coughing up a lung
✅ Decide if today’s a good day to let the kids play outdoors or, you know, breathe in general
✅ Know when to crank up the air filters and pretend they make a difference
Even better, BCMAC is adding a mobile air monitor in March that will test for cancer-linked toxins like benzene and 1,3-butadiene. Residents can even volunteer to host the monitor on their property! Because nothing screams “home sweet home” like setting up a pollution-detection station in your own backyard.
Shell’s Legacy of Contamination, Wrapped in Corporate PR
Of course, Shell would prefer if none of this was happening. The company doesn’t want people monitoring its pollution—it just wants to keep pumping out plastics and profits while local communities suffer the consequences. And let’s not forget the broader irony of Shell’s entire existence:
• It claims to care about sustainability while gutting its already flimsy green energy efforts.
• It profits off a plastic empire that’s helping to smother the planet in waste.
• It pretends to be a responsible corporate citizen while repeatedly violating environmental regulations.
And the best part? Shell’s shareholders don’t care. As long as the dividends keep flowing, BlackRock, Vanguard, and their fellow investment giants will continue to pour money into Shell, ensuring the pollution machine keeps running at full speed.
So, to the residents of Beaver County: Breathe carefully. And to Shell’s executives and investors? Try living downwind of your own facilities.
