Shell Ignores Legal Setback, Fires Up More North Sea Drilling

Drilling Ahead Despite Court Rulings and Climate Reality

Posted by John Donovan: 6 Feb 25

In yet another display of corporate arrogance, Shell has gleefully resumed oil and gas drilling in the North Sea—mere days after a Scottish court blocked its Jackdaw gas project. But why let minor inconveniences like legal rulings, environmental destruction, or a planet hurtling towards climate catastrophe get in the way of record-breaking profits?

The oil giant announced yesterday that it has restarted production at the Penguins field, proving once again that Shell will do whatever the hell it wants so long as there’s money to be made. Forget the fact that a judge in Edinburgh’s Court of Sessions just ruled the previous Tory government’s approval of Jackdaw as ‘unlawful’—Shell is charging full speed ahead anyway. read more

Greedy Oil Giant Shell Settles Greenpeace Lawsuit

Posted by John Donovan: 10 Dec 2024

Oh, Shell. The darling of sin stocks, the poster child for ruthless profiteering, environmental destruction, and apparently, public intimidation. In a move that screams look at us pretending to care, Shell has settled its $2.1 million lawsuit against Greenpeace. The crime? Greenpeace activists dared to peacefully board one of Shell’s oil rigs last year to protest its relentless climate destruction.

For all its legal muscle, Shell walked away with no damages. Not a dime. Instead, Greenpeace agreed to donate £300,000 to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)—a charity that actually saves lives, unlike Shell, which is busy plundering and destroying the planet. read more

Shell and Equinor: Merging to Squeeze Every Last Drop from the Dying North Sea

Posted by John Donovan: 5 Dec 2024

Ah, the North Sea—once a beacon of oil-soaked riches, now a rapidly dwindling fossil fuel graveyard. But don’t worry, Shell and Equinor are here to “boost profitability” by forming the biggest independent oil producer in the region, because clearly, what the world desperately needs right now is more oil.

This unholy matrimony between Shell (aka the corporate embodiment of pollution) and Equinor (Norway’s answer to Big Oil hypocrisy) promises to squeeze out a hefty 200,000–220,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2025. That’s up from 140,000 today because, obviously, the planet’s warming isn’t going fast enough. Shell and Equinor will split ownership 50-50, which feels just right for this joint venture into environmental destruction. read more

Shell’s Legacy of Greed, Death, and Destruction that Makes SPECTRE Look Like Boy Scouts

In today’s episode of “How Many More People Can Shell Kill for Profit?” we’ve got more lawsuits, more corporate greed, and the usual cocktail of death and destruction that Shell serves up with a smile. This time, it’s the North Sea’s Rosebank and Jackdaw fields, where Shell, along with its buddies Equinor and Ithaca Energy, are facing a Greenpeace judicial review for yet another scandalous environmental mess. Because if there’s one thing Shell knows how to do, it’s turn an environmental catastrophe into a line item on a balance sheet. read more

Shell’s Latest Genius Move: Dumping North Sea Assets While Pretending to Care About the Environment

Posted by John Donovan 31 July 2024

In a classic “What the Actual F**k” moment, Shell and ExxonMobil have decided to offload their UK North Sea assets to Viaro Energy. Yes, because when you’re done polluting the planet and making billions, why not pass the torch to someone else? Viaro Energy, through its subsidiary RockRose Energy, is all set to acquire these precious assets, pending regulatory approval. Because why wouldn’t the regulators approve another round of fossil fuel profiteering? read more

Shell’s Possible North Sea Wind Farm Bailout: A Nightmare for Labour’s Green Dreams

Posted by John Donovan: 26 July 2024

So, Shell might be bailing on its North Sea wind farm plans, and it’s a potential disaster for Labour’s shiny new energy ambitions. Yep, the oil behemoth that made over £22 billion in profit last year is apparently not too keen on sticking with two floating wind leases it grabbed from the ScotWind auction. If they decide to ditch these projects, it could send a clear message that Shell doesn’t think renewable energy is worth the trouble, despite all the greenwashing rhetoric. read more

Shell: “Screw Wind, Let’s Stick with Oil” – Because Who Needs a Planet Anyway?

A Shell spokesperson declined to comment, probably because they were too busy counting money.

Posted by John Donovan: 24 July 2024

In a move that can only be described as a middle finger to Mother Earth, Shell Plc has decided to sell its Scottish offshore wind leases to, you guessed it, refocus on good ol’ oil and gas. Yes, the same company that flirted with the idea of renewable energy is now ditching those dreams faster than you can say “global warming.”

According to unnamed sources (because even they know this is absurd), Shell is looking to offload its share of a joint venture with Iberdrola SA’s Scottish Power. This venture was supposed to create up to 5 gigawatts of floating offshore wind power. But who needs renewable energy when you can keep raking in profits from fossil fuels, right? read more

Shell and Exxon Flee North Sea Like It’s on Fire, Sell Assets to Viaro Energy

Posted by John Donovan: 30 May 2024

Shell and Exxon Mobil, the twin titans of oil pollution, are almost ready to dump their UK North Sea gas fields onto Viaro Energy for a measly $500 million (£395 million), according to those ever-reliable “sources” from Reuters.

In their desperate scramble to focus on more lucrative ventures (because who needs history or responsibility?), these oil behemoths are packing up from the ageing North Sea basin. This fire sale includes the Clipper and Leman Alpha field clusters, signalling the end of the long-standing Esso joint venture between Shell and Exxon, which dates back to 1965. RIP, corporate nostalgia. read more

UK Taxpayers Stuck with Shell’s Toxic Bill for North Sea Cleanup

In a move that’s sure to leave you shaking your head and checking your wallet, it turns out that you – yes, you, the taxpayer – are footing the bill for Shell’s latest environmental mess in the North Sea. Because apparently, when it comes to cleaning up their own toxic waste, Shell thinks it’s more fun to stick you with the tab.

Despite Shell’s best efforts to keep their grimy oil rigs intact and avoid the costly cleanup, decision-makers under the Ospar Convention – the folks in charge of marine pollution – have put their foot down. And while Shell is busy squirming, environmental groups like Greenpeace are cheering from the sidelines. read more

Shell’s Noble Eco-Mission: Demolishing Old HQ to Release Carbon Emissions

Let’s celebrate Shell’s exceptional eco-destruction and eagerly anticipate the next chapter in their mesmerizing journey toward a more polluted world. In the grand tapestry of Shell’s environmental exploits, this move shines as a beacon of unparalleled audacity.

Aberdeen, a city renowned for its beautiful granite architecture and oil riches, has been gifted with another masterpiece – Shell’s plan to knock down its former headquarters. This daring move is set to unleash a “vast amount of carbon emissions into the atmosphere,” showcasing Shell’s exceptional commitment to environmental preservation.

Shell, that beacon of sustainable practices, had graced Aberdeen with a modernist headquarters for five glorious decades before deciding to relocate last year. But wait, what’s even more thrilling than a stunning headquarters? Demolishing it! Shell’s brilliant strategy to demolish rather than upgrade and repurpose the building has sparked a delightful controversy. read more

Shell to Demolish Iconic Aberdeen HQ, Erasing Its Legacy and Dumping the Past

In a shocking move, Shell plans to demolish its landmark former headquarters in Aberdeen, showing its disregard for the city’s history and heritage.

Posted by JOHN DONOVAN July 19, 2023

Shell has announced its plans to demolish its historic former headquarters in Aberdeen, demonstrating its complete disregard for the city’s heritage and architectural significance. The Tullos building, which has been the symbol of Shell’s presence in Aberdeen since 1973, is set to be destroyed, leaving behind a trail of destruction and erasing the company’s footprint from the city.

According to documents submitted to Aberdeen City Council, Shell believes that the building’s age and condition render it unsuitable for future use. In other words, the company sees no value in preserving a piece of history and instead opts for demolition, showing its lack of respect for the past and its focus solely on the bottom line. read more

Shell Prelude Floating FLNG Barge: A Potentially Catastrophic Failure of Safety Standards

Shell Prelude Floating FLNG Barge: A Potentially Catastrophic Failure of Safety Standards

Posted by John Donovan: 12 May 2023

In yet another display of negligence and incompetence, Shell has shamefully suspended production at its Prelude floating LNG facility off Western Australia. The reason? A “trip.” How convenient that Shell conveniently brushes off this serious incident with such a casual technical term, downplaying the gravity of the situation.

Shell’s spokesperson, undoubtedly well-trained in corporate spin, reassures the public that they are working “methodically” to restart production, with safety apparently being their primary concern. But let’s not forget that this is the same company that has repeatedly demonstrated a reckless disregard for safety, as evidenced by the litany of incidents that have plagued the Prelude FLNG facility. read more

Shell selling stake in controversial Cambo oil field

Shell selling stake in controversial Cambo oil field

5 May 2023

Shell is selling its stake in the controversial Cambo oil field, it has been announced.

The project – which is west of Shetland – is the second-largest undeveloped oil and gas discovery in the UK’s North Sea.

The oil major is looking for a buyer for its 30% holding.

Cambo has been the focal point of many protests, and Shell has been rumoured for months to be looking for someone to take over its part.

The remaining 70% of the field is owned by Ithaca Energy.

Ithaca said the two companies had agreed on several possible outcomes.

Shell might sell all of its stake, but if it only manages to find a buyer for a portion of the stake it could offload its remaining share to Ithaca. read more

Shell pays just $8m tax on annual production in UK North Sea

Emily Gosden, Energy Editor

Wednesday March 29 2023,

Shell made net tax payments of $8 million for its UK North Sea operations last year — less than it paid its outgoing chief executive.

The London-listed oil and gas major said it had incurred a $134 million tax bill under Britain’s “energy profits levy” windfall tax in respect of its 2022 profits.

Shell threatens Greenpeace protestors with jail and fines: But legal tactics fail as Greenpeace sends second boat and more climbers

Greenpeace International: 6 February 2023

Action pics and video available here, with updates throughout the day.

Amsterdam, Netherlands – Shell has attempted to silence Greenpeace International’s peaceful occupation of its oil and gas platform at sea, by hitting the campaign group with an injunction late on Friday, February 3, threatening up to two years’ jail time and fines.[1]

But today, Shell’s heavy-handed legal tactics failed, as Greenpeace International successfully went ahead with plans to escalate its protest by adding two more climbers to occupy the company’s oil and gas platform – using other boats unaffected by the court order.

Protestors are demanding that the company stops expanding oil and gas production around the world, takes responsibility for fuelling the climate crisis, and pays up for the climate destruction it is causing everywhere.

At around 9am (CET) in the Channel, the Greenpeace France-chartered Merida trimaran and two small boats approached the White Marlin heavy-lift vessel, which is carrying Shell’s 34,000 tonne oil and gas platform to the North Sea. read more

Oil giant Shell set to unveil record profits of more than £30bn as households and businesses grapple with sky-high energy bills

Oil giant Shell set to unveil record profits of more than £30bn as households and businesses grapple with sky-high energy bills

Oil giant Shell is set to unveil record profits of more than £30 billion as households and businesses grapple with sky-high energy bills.

The corporate giant is expected to say this week that annual profit more than doubled as the war in Ukraine restricted supplies from Russia, sending the price of gas and electricity rocketing.

The FTSE100 behemoth and its arch rival BP have faced mounting criticism for cashing in. BP chief executive Bernard Looney famously described his company as resembling a ‘cash machine’ because of the amount of money it has made from elevated prices.

But, since he made those comments in 2021 – three months before the invasion of Ukraine – the profits made by BP and Shell have continued to escalate rapidly. read more
