Jackdaw gas field set for official approval

Michael Glackin:

Westminster’s oil and gas regulator is set to approve a controversial North Sea gas project it previously rejected on environmental grounds amid increased concerns about UK energy security.

It is understood approval for Shell’s Jackdaw gas field, 150 miles east of Aberdeen, is now “imminent” following Russia’s decision to cut off gas supplies to a number of European countries. read more

It has now fined Shell and served the company with a sanction notice for breaching five field consents.

The NSTA said adhering to production consents is “an indicator of good stewardship of fields, and is an important component of a stable, well-regulated industry which has the trust and confidence of investors and the public”. read more

Ukraine’s government writes to Shell, accusing it of ‘bankrolling Putin’s war with an accounting trick’

JACK MENDEL:  22 April 2022

Ukraine has accused energy giant Shell of continuing to “bankroll Putin’s war machine” buy buying oil through an “accounting trick.”

In an angry letter sent to the oil company’s boss, Kyiv branded it “deplorable” that firm was still buying fuel linked to the Kremlin indirectly.

According to the Telegraph, despite a commitment to stop purchasing energy, Shell considers refined oil products as not being Russian if less than half of the blend is from the country. read more

Shell says North Sea windfall tax won’t ease energy crisis

By Mark Williamson Group Business Correspondent

SHELL chief executive Ben van Beurden has rejected calls for a windfall tax on North Sea firms and said the company remains keen to invest in new fields in the area after dropping plans for the controversial Cambo development.

The energy giant may have helped stoke calls for a one-off tax to be imposed on firms to help tackle the energy crisis in the UK yesterday when it posted a 300 per cent increase in annual profits, to $19.3 billion (£14.3bn), from $4.8bn. read more

It follows a year-long strategic review by the group, which said the change reflects “the evolving nature of the industry”.

OGUK said its members, which include BP, British Gas owner Centrica, Shell and Chevron approved the name change in December. read more

Updated 1221 GMT (2021 HKT) January 10, 2022

London (CNN Business)The UK government is coming under mounting pressure to increase taxes on oil and gas companies, including BP and Shell. The aim: to help British households cope with skyrocketing energy bills.

Shell pulling the plug on the Cambo North Sea oilfield is a problem for us, too

Oliver Shah Sunday December 05 2021, 12.01am, The Sunday Times

You can’t be sure of much when it comes to Shell these days — and Shell, it seems, can’t be sure of anything when it comes to politics. Last month, chief executive Ben van Beurden was fêted for moving the oil major’s headquarters from Holland to London as part of a simplification of its corporate structure.

On Thursday, Shell pulled out of a major oil project in a storm of recrimination, saying the economics were “not strong enough at this time” and complaining of “potential for delays”. read more

Energy companies’ reputational struggles and Whitehall’s green ambitions leave oil investment in limbo  and 4 December 2021

It was less than a month ago that Kwasi Kwarteng was celebrating Shell’s plans to move its group headquarters out of Holland and to the UK.

The business secretary heralded the decision as “a clear vote of confidence in the British economy as we work to strengthen competitiveness, attract investment and create jobs”.

Today he may have more complex feelings towards the FTSE 100 oil giant – and greater uncertainty about the challenges ahead for the economy. read more
