Qatargas and Shell have joined hands for research on liquefied natural gas (LNG) logistics.

The aim is to develop new ways to ‘optimise supply chains to deliver LNG to global markets’. The research will be conducted at the Qatar Shell Research & Technology Centre at the Qatar Science & Technology Park.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to the effect was signed by Faisal M al-Suwaidi, Qatargas Operating Company chairman and chief executive officer and Andy Brown, Pearl GTL managing director and Qatar Shell country chairman.

Also present at the signing were Ahmed al-Khulaifi, Qatargas chief operating officer (commercial & shipping) and Wael Sawan, Qatar Shell vice-president (new business development).

Al-Suwaidi said, “We are pleased to be able to be a partner with Shell in this research project. As a company we are committed to innovation and operational excellence. We hope this partnership will develop and enhance our logistics and supply chain capabilities and allow Qatargas to deliver energy to customers in a most effective and efficient manner.”

Andy Brown said: “Qatargas is set to become the world’s premier LNG producer, and Shell is a pioneer in LNG spanning five decades. Therefore, it is significant that Shell and Qatargas work together on this research topic to optimise LNG supply chains. This new research complements the work we are already doing at the science park on upstream and GTL technologies. It also reinforces Shell’s commitment to help develop Qatar’s research capabilities.”

Shell is committed to a substantial expenditure of up to $100mn over a 10-year period on a world-class technology innovation and development programmes at the science park.
