Dutch Court Ruling on Trial of Shell Over 1995 Execution of Ogoni Activists is Victory For Human Rights – MOSOP

Fegalo Nsuke: President, MOSOP

On behalf of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), I write to sincerely convey our joy and solidarity with the families of our heroes who were executed by the Nigerian government and Shell in 1995.

Today’s (May 1, 2019) decision of the Dutch Court in assuming jurisdiction to determine whether Royal Dutch Shell was complicit in the Nigerian government’s execution of the Ogoni nine brings hope to us and the over one million Ogoni people around the world that Shell and the Nigerian Government itself will someday be made to account for the killing of thousands of Ogonis in Nigeria.

The 1995 hangings had been one of the most traumatic experiences of the Ogoni people. Ever since, the Nigerian Government and Shell have battled to suppress our people and subject us into submission through military repression, attempting to use every means available to force the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland as if all is well.

Today’s judgment opens a window of hope and sends a clear message to dictators, inhuman and discriminatory systems such as is the case of the Ogoni people in Nigeria that justice may be delayed but will never be denied.

We are assured by this ruling that our world will not be completely silent in the face of gross human rights abuses committed by multinationals like Shell Petroleum especially when they perceive their victims to be ignorant and will conclude that corporate irresponsibility will never be questioned.

We are confident that not only will Shell’s day come but Nigeria itself will sooner than later be called to question over her dirty wars against the Ogoni people, the 1995 hangings and the thousands of Ogonis killed by its military with support from Shell.

We congratulate the families of the Ogoni nine for their courage and will only hope that this case will, for the first time, expose to the world the inhumanity of Shell and the Nigerian Government over a well planned and executed genocide in Nigeria against the Ogoni people.

Signed:

Fegalo Nsuke
