REMEMBERING OGONI 9 HERO
DR. BARINEM NUBARI KIOBEL

By John Donovan
This year is the sad Silver Jubilee of a landmark human rights atrocity.
Today is the 25th anniversary of the death of Dr Barinem Nubari Kiobel who is lovingly remembered every year by his widow Esther Kiobel.
Dr Kiobel was a member of the “Ogoni 9” (which included Ken Saro-Wiwa), all innocent people executed in Nigeria on November 10, 1995, by the murderous Abacha military regime. The regime was closely associated with and actively supported by Shell.
The oil giant even supplied weapons used to repress and kill peaceful Ogoni activists rightfully protesting against Shell’s plunder and nightmarish pollution of their beloved homeland.
Shell was also responsible for spying activity directed against the associates of Ken Saro-Wiwa by a spy firm (Hakluyt & Company) in which titled Shell directors Sir Peter Holmes and Sir Willaim Purves were major shareholders and the ultimate spymasters.

Remembering the Hero
The horror of that biting day of woes fail to depart from my memory. The day that love was stolen from me and a kind gent was sacrificed on the altar of collective struggle. The day that daylight became night and joy turned bloody. How can I forget you oh November 10, 1995? You were the bloodiest day in my life. No other day has been as bitter as you. My dear husband, Dr. Barinem Nubari Kiobel knew the gallows on that day. Like his Master, the Christ, he laid down his life for the love of his people. He was set up, falsely accused, and made to pay with his life. As always, I celebrate you the hero. You are forever in my heart!!

The event of November 10, 1995 is permanently stamped (like a tribal mark) on the heart of every individual who have their ancestry traceable to the Province of Ogoniland.
Dr. Barinem Kiobel (like the other 8), you paid the supreme price, you paid with your blood for a better Ogoniland, you and others are always on our mind.
Continue to rest in perfect peace.
