Shell Lays Off Workers While Pretending to Care About “Renewables”—Business as Usual for Big Oil

19 Oct 2024

Ah, Shell, ever the master of hypocrisy. In a move that surprises no one, Shell Energy Solutions—the little offshoot of the British oil behemoth—announced it’s axing over 100 Houston-area employees just in time for the holidays. Because nothing says “Merry Christmas” like a pink slip from one of the world’s richest, most polluting corporations. And, naturally, this was slipped out through a WARN notice filed with the Texas Workforce Commission. Classy.

So, what’s the excuse this time? Shell’s PR wizards claim it’s all about “anticipated ongoing and future operations.” Translation: Shell’s figured out how to screw over more people with fewer resources. The cuts range from business analysts to engineering and project managers, but don’t worry—Shell promises there will be “no current impact” on customers. That’s right, folks, business as usual. Nothing to see here except a multinational corporation tightening its belt after decades of profiting from environmental destruction.

In case you forgot, Shell Energy Solutions is the same company that supposedly jumped into the Texas market in 2022 with a 100% renewable electricity plan. Yes, Shell—the same company that’s been pumping carbon into the atmosphere since before most of us were born—wants you to believe it’s all about clean energy now. They even offered solar panel homeowners a buyback plan for excess energy, because who doesn’t love a little greenwashing with their morning coffee?

But let’s not forget who’s really pulling the strings here. Shell’s Houston headquarters might be waving the renewable flag, but let’s be real—this is just another way to pad their already fat wallets. And speaking of wallets, let’s give a shoutout to BlackRock, one of Shell’s biggest investors. I’m sure they’re sitting pretty while 103 more workers are shown the door.

The best part? Shell wants us to believe they’re “committed to supporting staff throughout this process.” Oh sure, because nothing says “support” like booting people out the door as part of your “future operations.” Maybe the support comes in the form of a nice little severance package to keep the masses quiet while Shell continues its charade of caring about the environment. Spoiler alert: they don’t.

So, as Shell marches on with its never-ending quest for profit, remember that they’ll throw workers under the bus while smiling for the cameras about their so-called commitment to renewable energy. After all, for a company like Shell, it’s all about the optics.
