Shell’s Blatant Disregard for Climate Ruling Exposed by Milieudefensie

In a scathing indictment, environmental organization Milieudefensie has accused Shell of shamelessly flouting a court ruling demanding improvements in its sustainability policy from two years ago. Despite losing the lawsuit to the energy giant, Milieudefensie’s progress report, released just days before the upcoming shareholders’ meeting on May 23, slams Shell’s sustainability efforts as an abysmal failure. read more

Why the Church of England is taking on Shell

The Telegraph

Why the Church of England is taking on Shell

Short-term profits cannot come before the long-term health of our planet

The oil and gas industry in Europe is at a crossroads.

The decisions the sector makes on where to allocate capital could make or break our collective efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C, with massive implications for the economy, for communities and in particular the poorest and most vulnerable on the planet.

The recent announcements by BP that it is weakening its climate targets, and the none too subtle hints from Shell being read by the market that it is likely to do something similar, signals that the lure of short-term profit maximisation is trumping the long-term sustainability of these companies and of our planet.

A disorderly climate transition caused by delayed action will not only miss the goals of the Paris climate agreement but directly work against the financial interests of pension funds and other long-term investors and their beneficiaries. read more

The clergy’s pension fund will vote to oust Wael Sawan after accusing him of backtracking on climate commitments

By Matt Oliver: 9 May 2023 • 6:00am

The Church of England is pushing to oust the chief executive of Shell following a row over green investments.

The clergy’s Pension Board is preparing to vote to oust Wael Sawan and chairman Sir Andrew Mackenzie at Shell’s upcoming shareholder meeting later this month.

It comes amid claims that the oil and gas giant has backtracked on net zero commitments.

The pension board, which manages the clergy’s £3bn retirement pot, is concerned that London-listed Shell has rowed back on promises to switch to clean power after the Ukraine war sent oil and gas prices soaring. read more

Shell pulls out of large carbon capture project in northern England

By Ron Bousso and Susanna Twidale: 25 April 2023

LONDON (Reuters) -Shell has decided to pull out of the Northern Endurance Partnership, one of Britain’s largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects aimed at decarbonising industrial clusters.

Shell said it had decided to pull out of the NEP project after a review of its strategy and portfolio and will focus on the Acorn CCS project in Scotland, for which it is the technical developer.

“We remain committed to helping the (British) government realise its ambition of four industrial CCS clusters by 2030,” the company said.

Shell Chief Executive Wael Sawan has carried out a review of several of the group’s emerging low-carbon businesses since taking office in January. read more

SHELL CALLS POLICE ON LORD SENTAMU

SHELL CALLS POLICE ON LORD SENTAMU

On Friday, April 21, Christian Climate Action held the No Faith In Fossil Fuels Service with charities such as Tearfund, CAFOD, Christian Aid, A Rocha, Operation Noah and Green Christian. From this service we walked via Shell headquarters to Parliament. When we stopped at Shell, Lord John Sentamu tried to deliver a letter. However Shell locked their doors and would not allow him to enter. We were then notified by the police that Shell had contacted them regarding Lord Sentamu trying to enter.

Here is the letter that Lord Sentamu was trying to deliver.

Wael Sawan
Chief Executive Officer, Shell plc
c/o Shell Centre, York Road
London, SE1 7NA

Dear Mr. Sawan,

‘The obvious is that which is never seen
Until someone expresses it simply.’ Khalil Gibran

‘Fossil fuels are a dead end — for our planet, for humanity and for economies.’ António Guterres
The science is clear. Summarising a recent IPCC report, the head of the UN said we are ‘firmly on track toward an unlivable world’”. The International Energy Agency’s 1.5°C report states that from
December 2021 any new fossil fuel extraction project is inconsistent with a 1.5°C pathway. read more

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) -The Dutch government on Thursday said it would support oil and gas company Shell in its efforts to reduce its CO2 and nitrogen emissions in the Netherlands in the coming years.

Shell: Solar And Wind Are Growing Faster Than LNG Ever Did

Shell: Solar And Wind Are Growing Faster Than LNG Ever Did

  • Shell: Wind and solar production capacities are growing faster than liquefied natural gas and nuclear ever did.
  • Government incentives and energy security issues have given renewables another bump.
  • While solar and wind are seeing a much steeper growth trajectory than nuclear and liquefied natural gas did, energy demand, too, has seen an extreme growth trend.

Wind and solar production capacities are growing faster than liquefied natural gas and nuclear ever did. A recent report from Shell Plc examined and compared the growth trajectories of these four energy forms, which have all emerged within the past 60 years, and which tell a very clear story about how the global energy sector is growing and changing. Put simply: our youngest and cleanest energy technologies are the fastest growing the world has seen in at least 50 years. read more

Shell splits renewables business in CEO efficiency drive

By Ron Bousso:

LONDON, March 30 (Reuters) – Shell (SHEL.L) is splitting up its renewables and low-carbon division as part of CEO Wael Sawan’s shake-up to boost the energy giant’s returns.

The changes come as Sawan, who took office at the start of the year, has signalled in recent weeks that Shell is considering ditching oil reduction output targets as part of its energy transition plans. read more

Shell: All Options On The Table For New Energy Strategy

  • Shell is considering a new energy strategy to balance climate targets with energy security.
  • The CEO mentioned that the new strategy is expected to be released in June, with all options on the table regarding production targets and strategic decisions.
  • Shell is experiencing the energy trilemma, trying to balance affordable, secure, and low emissions supply, while still needing oil and gas for the long term future.

Shell is currently deliberating how to reconcile energy security with climate targets in a new strategy expected in June, with all options on the table, the supermajor’s chief executive Wael Sawan told The Wall Street Journal in a recent interview.

Whatever the decision of Sawan, other top executives, and the board, Shell is likely to disappoint investors, environmentalists, or both. read more

Fossil fuel greenwash

GLOBAL WITNESS

Fossil fuel greenwash

15 February 2023

Despite growing pressure to curb greenwashing, oil and gas majors Shell and BP continue to promote environmentally friendly narratives their core business does not back up.

In the wake of a UK government warning in late 2021 to stop making misleading environmental claims, BP has more than doubled the amount spent on purchasing advertisements that greenwash its image on Facebook and Instagram compared to 2021.

Meanwhile Shell has continued to run greenwashing ads on Instagram without disclosing the ads relate to political issues as required by the platform. Meta has allowed Shell to re-publish essentially identical political ads without labelling them as such, and continued to profit from the greenwashing ads of polluting industries. read more

Shell’s lack of ambition is maddening: it’s time to speed up transition to renewables

The Guardian

Shell’s lack of ambition is maddening: it’s time to speed up transition to renewables

Nils Pratley

Thu 2 Feb 2023 19.30 GMT

The chief executive has changed at Shell but the song remains the same. The energy transition will be “balanced” and “we intend to remain disciplined while delivering compelling shareholder returns,” declared Wael Sawan. Translation: the company will not use the sudden arrival of spectacular financial riches to boost spending on renewables.

Being “disciplined” is, of course, an admirable ambition when presented starkly and without context. No chief executive of any company is ever likely to tell investors that the plan is to take wild punts on projects with little prospect of a decent return. But there is a world of nuance between the extremes. read more

Amsterdam, Netherlands – Greenpeace activists from Argentina, Turkey, the US and the UK have boarded a Shell contracted vessel in the Atlantic Ocean with a banner bearing the message: “Stop Drilling. Start Paying”.

Just two days ahead of Shell’s profits announcement, four Greenpeace International activists boarded the White Marlin vessel at sea north of the Canary Islands in a peaceful protest against the climate devastation around the world caused by Shell and the wider fossil fuel industry, without paying a penny towards loss and damage. read more

Shell pays no UK windfall tax despite profits jump

Shell pays no UK windfall tax despite profits jump

By Michael Race: Business reporter, BBC News: 27 Oct 2022

Shell has reported its second highest quarterly profit on record but it has not paid the UK’s windfall tax on energy firms.

The energy giant said global profits reached $9.5bn (£8.2bn) between July and September, compared to $4.2bn during the same period last year.

However, Shell said that because it had made large investments in the UK, it meant it had made no profit here.

It also does not expect to start paying windfall taxes until early next year.

The Energy Price Levy – or windfall tax – on the profits of energy firms was announced by Rishi Sunak in May, when he was chancellor. At the time he said it would raise £5bn in its first year. read more

Shell Loses Dutch Appeal Over Misleading Carbon Emission Ads

Shell Loses Dutch Appeal Over Misleading Carbon Emission Ads

(Bloomberg) — Shell Plc lost its appeal against the Dutch advertising watchdog’s ruling that an ad campaign that promoted carbon-dioxide emission credits was misleading and must be withdrawn.

Bloomberg News: Diederik Baazil and Cagan Koc: 21 Oct 2022

(Bloomberg) — Shell’s advertisements offer customers the option to pay extra for their fuel, with the money going to buy credits in emission-reduction projects that “compensate” for the pollution generated. The ads are a reboot of a similar campaign last year that the regulator also deemed misleading. read more
