Shell pays no UK windfall tax despite profits jump

By Michael Race: Business reporter, BBC News: 27 Oct 2022

Shell has reported its second highest quarterly profit on record but it has not paid the UK’s windfall tax on energy firms.

The energy giant said global profits reached $9.5bn (£8.2bn) between July and September, compared to $4.2bn during the same period last year.

However, Shell said that because it had made large investments in the UK, it meant it had made no profit here.

It also does not expect to start paying windfall taxes until early next year.

The Energy Price Levy – or windfall tax – on the profits of energy firms was announced by Rishi Sunak in May, when he was chancellor. At the time he said it would raise £5bn in its first year. read more

Shell Loses Dutch Appeal Over Misleading Carbon Emission Ads

Shell Loses Dutch Appeal Over Misleading Carbon Emission Ads

(Bloomberg) — Shell Plc lost its appeal against the Dutch advertising watchdog’s ruling that an ad campaign that promoted carbon-dioxide emission credits was misleading and must be withdrawn.

Bloomberg News: Diederik Baazil and Cagan Koc: 21 Oct 2022

(Bloomberg) — Shell’s advertisements offer customers the option to pay extra for their fuel, with the money going to buy credits in emission-reduction projects that “compensate” for the pollution generated. The ads are a reboot of a similar campaign last year that the regulator also deemed misleading. read more

Activist Investor: Shell Must Do More To Curb Emissions

An expected drop in Shell’s net greenhouse gas emissions is not aligned with the Paris Agreement and with a Dutch court order for the now UK-based supermajor to slash emissions much more by 2030, activist investor Follow This says.

A recent report from Australia-based Global Climate Insights showed that Shell’s net emissions, after CCUS and offsets, are forecast to be 6% lower in 2030 compared to 2019, assuming it is on track to achieve its targets for CCUS and offsets. read more

Shell’s £80m boss Ben van Beurden preparing to join stream of FTSE100 bosses heading for the door

The £80million boss of Shell is preparing to join the stream of FTSE100 bosses heading for the door.

Ben van Beurden – who, it emerged in March, bagged £4.6million in bonuses on top of his £1.4million salary last year, taking his total pay and bonuses to almost £80million during his nine years at the helm – could step down as soon as 2023 as the oil giant begins its search for a replacement.

His departure will mark the end of an era for Shell, as it tries to toe the tricky line of boosting Britain’s energy security with embracing sustainable technologies. While Van Beurden’s legacy includes a commitment to reduce oil production, he has been criticised for failing to take more drastic action. read more

Shell boss van Beurden: ‘Supply needs to adjust but to less demand’

For the first time in almost a decade running Europe’s biggest oil and gas company, Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden reckons he is being listened to.

The commodity shock sparked by the war in Ukraine has sent European officials scrambling to better understand the global energy system and secure new sources of supply. Some of them have ended up at Shell’s door.

“On energy security matters, energy balances, investment levels, I’ve never had as good a set of discussions with governments as we are having today,” van Beurden told the Financial Times. read more

Shell’s supersize hydrogen plant sparks hope of green revolution

Emily Gosden: Energy Editor:

Shell has begun building Europe’s largest “green” hydrogen plant that will use electricity from an offshore wind farm to produce the clean-burning fuel.

The oil and gas group said it had taken the final investment decision on the 200 megawatt electrolyser in the port of Rotterdam and expected the plant to start operating in 2025.

Shell said the capacity of the plant was equivalent to roughly two thirds of all electrolyser capacity in operation globally today. The new facility will use electricity from the Hollandse Kust (Noord) offshore wind farm that Shell is jointly building about ten nautical miles off the coast of the Netherlands. read more

Carbon dioxide compensation? Shell again criticised for misleading advert

June 30, 2022

The Dutch advertising standards authority has again criticised an advert by oil giant Shell, following complaints by anti-fossil fuel campaigners and Greenpeace Nederland.

The company cannot claim that compensating for carbon dioxide emissions nullifies the damage to the climate caused by a car trip, the commission said on Wednesday.

Last year, the RCC ordered the term CO2-neutral be removed from the same ad. Shell complied, and replaced it with the CO2 compensation claim. read more
