Shell Offloads More Dirty Business: Tenaz Energy Buys Dutch Offshore Assets for $180 Million

Posted by John Donovan: 18 July 2024

In a move that’s as surprising as rain in the Netherlands, Shell and ExxonMobil, the environmental knights in shining armor, have decided to pawn off their offshore assets in the Dutch North Sea to Canada’s Tenaz Energy. For the low, low price of €165 million ($180.33 million), Tenaz Energy gets to inherit all the shiny shares of NAM Offshore B.V., a joint venture that also involves the Dutch government.

NAM operates the infamous Groningen gas field in the Netherlands. But wait, there’s more! This sweetheart deal, expected to close by mid-2025, includes all of NAM’s offshore exploration and production businesses, the pipeline infrastructure, and the onshore processing facilities—just not the assets in the Ameland area. Apparently, even Shell has to hold onto something. read more

Shell’s Latest Venture: Throwing Money at Abu Dhabi LNG Project to Maintain its Greedy Legacy

Posted by John Donovan 12 July 2024

In the latest installment of “Shell’s Quest for Global Domination,” the European energy behemoth has inked a deal to invest in Abu Dhabi’s Ruwais liquefied natural-gas (LNG) project. Alongside equally virtuous partners BP, TotalEnergies, and Japan’s Mitsui, Shell is securing its place in the race to expand the UAE’s LNG production capacity.

Shell’s Slice of the Pie:

Shell proudly announced it would grab a 10% stake in the Ruwais project, matching the stakes of BP, TotalEnergies, and Mitsui. Not to be outdone, Shell will also buy a cool 1 million metric tons of LNG annually, while Mitsui will settle for a mere 600,000 tons. Details of the financial arrangements? Oh, those remain as opaque as ever. read more

Shell to Exploit Manatee Gas Field: Because the World Needs More Gas Giants

Posted by John Donovan 10 July 2024

Gas, Gas, and More Gas:

Shell announced on Tuesday that it’s moving forward with the Manatee gas field project in Trinidad, aiming to beef up its liquefied natural gas (LNG) empire. Nestled in the East Coast Marine Area, one of the Caribbean’s busiest gas-producing zones, the Manatee field is part of the cross-border Loran-Manatee discovery shared with Venezuela. This gem holds about 10 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas, with Trinidad sitting on a modest 2.7 tcf of that stash. read more

Posted by John Donovan: 9 July 2024

In the latest chapter of “Shell’s Ever-Expanding Environmental Impact,” John Wood Group PLC has snagged a massive engineering contract for Shell’s Prelude Floating Liquified Natural Gas (FLNG) facility in Western Australia. Because clearly, the world’s largest floating offshore gas facility is exactly what we need right now.

Brownfield Engineering Extravaganza:

Shell Stumbles: Takes $2 Billion Hit, Whines About Weak Gas Trading

Posted by John Donovan: 5 July 2024

In the latest episode of “Shell Can’t Catch a Break,” the oil giant is poised to take a hit of up to $2 billion in post-tax impairments. Why? Because they’re pausing construction on their much-touted biofuels plant in Rotterdam and offloading their chemicals refinery in Singapore. All this drama while Europe’s largest energy company grapples with weak market conditions and a downturn in their golden goose: gas trading.

Apparently, Shell’s integrated-gas segment, usually the crown jewel of their profit empire, isn’t looking too hot this quarter. They predict results will be lower than the first quarter, where they enjoyed a cushy $3.68 billion in adjusted earnings. Seasonality, they say. But hey, at least it might match last year’s second quarter of $2.5 billion. Small victories, right? read more

Shell Gives the Green Light to Carbon Capture Shenanigans in Alberta – Whoop-de-doo!

So, the bigwigs at Shell have decided to throw us another bone and announced not one, but two shiny new carbon capture projects in Alberta. Because, apparently, the oil giant known for its greed and pollution suddenly wants to save the planet. Cue the applause.

The company proudly declared the launch of the Polaris carbon capture project at its Scotford refinery and chemicals complex near Fort Saskatchewan. And let’s not forget the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub, a grand partnership with Atco EnPower. The first phase will allegedly store the CO2 captured by the Polaris project. Because what’s better than an oil giant patting itself on the back for trying to clean up its own mess? read more

Sir Andrew Mackenzie and Shell’s Delusional Climate “Solutions”

Posted by John Donovan: 24 June 2024

Ah, Sir Andrew Mackenzie, the knight in shining oil-stained armour, has graced us with his profound wisdom on tackling climate change. Who would have thought that solving one of the world’s biggest crises could be more challenging than running a mining company? Not Sir Andrew, apparently.

In a revelation that’s about as surprising as finding sand in the desert, Sir Andrew admits that handling climate change at Shell is “quite a lot harder than I expected.” You see, at BHP, he could comfortably discuss all sorts of theoretical climate solutions without actually having to implement them. Now, faced with the greasy reality at Shell, things aren’t so easy. read more

Shell Buys Pavilion Energy: Because Who Needs Clean Energy Anyway?

Posted by John Donovan: 20 June 2024

In a move that’s sure to make environmentalists everywhere throw up in their mouths a little, Shell, the world’s top LNG trader and our favourite oil-stained villain is beefing up its fossil fuel empire by buying Pavilion Energy. Yes, you heard that right. Shell is doubling down on liquefied natural gas because apparently, climate change isn’t happening fast enough.

Shell announced on Tuesday that its subsidiary, Shell Eastern Trading Pte. Ltd., has inked a deal with Carne Investments Pte. Ltd., an indirect subsidiary of Temasek, to snatch up 100% of Pavilion Energy. What better way to celebrate summer than by acquiring yet another company to exploit natural resources? read more

Trump Convicted for Fraud, Shell Execs Next in Line for Climate Catastrophe Crimes?

Shell execs, are you sweating yet?

POSTED BY JOHN DONOVAN: 3 June 2024

On May 30, a New York jury found former President Donald Trump guilty of 34 charges related to hush money payments and falsifying business records. While the country is split over the conviction and the inevitable appeal, there’s an unexpected silver lining: this case could be a roadmap for nailing climate criminals like the execs at Shell and TotalEnergies.

Activists have long been dragging companies and governments into court to make them face the consequences of their climate sins. Most of these battles have been in civil courts, where the penalties are mostly financial—because nothing screams justice like a fine that barely dents corporate profits. The one notable exception was a 2021 Dutch court ruling that ordered Royal Dutch Shell to cut carbon emissions by 45% by 2030. Shell, predictably, is appealing the decision because, you know, profits over planet. read more

Shell to Save Asia with More Pollution and Broken Promises

Posted by JOHN DONOVAN: 22 May 2024

In the latest episode of “How to Ruin the Planet While Making Billions,” Shell, the infamous oil behemoth, has announced that it will generously provide more liquefied natural gas (LNG) to emerging Asian markets. Because what could be better for countries like the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Bangladesh than a hefty dose of fossil fuels?

Asian spot LNG prices hit their highest levels since January last week, thanks to scorching weather that left everyone sweltering and clamoring for that sweet, sweet “super-chilled fuel.” Shell’s Country Chair in Australia, Cecile Wake, beamed with pride as she revealed this grand plan at the Australian Energy Producers Conference. According to her, “That combination of decarbonisation, and declining domestic production (will drive LNG demand growth).” Yes, nothing screams decarbonization like ramping up fossil fuel production. read more

Shell Left Sputtering as Netherlands Closes Groningen Gas Field for Good

Posted by John Donovan: 17 April 2024

Well, well, well, looks like the Netherlands is finally saying “buh-bye” to the Groningen gas field, leaving Shell scratching its head and counting its losses.

Yep, you heard it right. The Dutch Senate has slammed the door shut on Groningen, putting an end to decades of gas extraction in the region. No more tapping into Mother Earth for those sweet, sweet fossil fuels.

Why, you ask? Oh, just a little thing called seismic risks. Apparently, all that drilling was causing a bit of a ruckus underground, leading to earthquakes that made buildings shake like a leaf in a hurricane. read more

Shell Disappointed: Lower Q1 Earnings Expected from Natural Gas Trading

Posted by John Donovan 7 April 2024

In a stunning twist of fate that surely shook the ivory towers of Shell, the UK-based oil giant confessed to expecting a downturn in its Integrated Gas division’s trading results for the first quarter of 2024. Brace yourselves, folks; it seems they won’t be swimming in gold coins this time around.

Shell, in its prophetic earnings preview released on Friday, forecasted a “significant” dip in trading and optimization results compared to the dazzling performance it put on in the fourth quarter of 2023. Oh, the agony of not being able to sustain such brilliance! read more

Shell’s “Dragon” Scheme: Seeking a License to Pollute

Posted by John Donovan 4 April 2024

In a move that surprises absolutely no one, Shell is angling for a long-term license from the US government for their latest gas project in Venezuela. Because apparently, when it comes to exploiting natural resources and wrecking the planet, Shell just can’t get enough.

Dubbed the “Dragon” field, this little venture is estimated to contain a whopping 4.2 trillion cubic feet of gas – because why settle for small-scale environmental destruction when you can go big, right? read more

Shell’s Corporate Doublespeak: “Sorry, But We Can’t Save the Planet if You Can’t Pay Your Energy Bill!”

Posted by John Donovan 2 April 2024

In a bizarre turn of events that left many scratching their heads in disbelief, Shell has taken to the courts to argue that saving the planet might just be a tad too expensive. Because who needs clean air and a livable future when you can have cheap gas and record profits, am I right?

As a crucial climate case unfolded in The Hague, lawyers for Shell PLC pulled out all the stops with their jaw-dropping argument: If ordinary citizens can’t afford their energy bills, then forget about saving the planet. Because apparently, the only thing standing between us and climate catastrophe is the price of a monthly utility bill.

In what can only be described as a masterclass in corporate doublespeak, Shell’s lawyer, Daan Lunsingh Scheurleer, solemnly declared in court: “If people can no longer pay for their energy or that energy is no longer reliable… the support of people in the country… for the energy transition will be lost.” Translation: Sorry, folks, but saving the planet is just too damn expensive. read more
