Homeowners threatened with debt collectors over incorrect bills

Martin Stanley, 48, from Leicester, was forced to pay nearly £400 after being threatened with debt collectors and a default against his credit file by SSE, after it incorrectly increased his final bill.
Mr Stanley had tried to switch from SSE to Shell Energy, but after submitting a final reading, was told that it was too low compared to industry data. Shell then based his starting reading on the “estimated usage”. This meant Mr Martin suddenly owed £675 to his old supplier.

BRITAIN’S biggest energy firms are set for a £1billion windfall as they hike prices for hard-pressed loyal customers from Thursday.
Around ten million families on standard tariffs — many already with money struggles as a result of Covid — face bill rises of almost £100.
It comes after energy regulator Ofgem raised the price cap on standard variable tariffs.
They are the contracts that most people will be on if they have not switched supplier in the past year or so.

Over a million UK energy customers who switched providers overcharged
Ovo and Shell were identified as the worst offenders.
More than a million UK energy customers that switched providers could have been overcharged due to errors made by suppliers.
According to Ofgem, the sector’s biggest suppliers made mistakes, including Ovo Energy, Shell, British Gas, E.On, EDF, Npower, Scottish Power, SSE and Octopus.
Ovo and Shell were identified as the worst offenders.
Shell puts electric charge into green energy future

Royal Dutch Shell plans to operate as many as 2.5 million electric vehicle charging points globally by 2030 under a new emissions-reduction strategy that will see its oil output decline.
The Anglo-Dutch oil giant sought to flesh out its 2050 net zero emissions goal with a plan to focus on customer-facing business such as electricity sales, rather than power generation like its peers. It intends to operate half a million charging points by 2025, up from 60,000 today, and could increase this to 2.5 million by the end of the decade.

Shell to acquire UK’s largest electric vehicle charging network

(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell said on Monday it was acquiring the owner of the UK’s largest public electric vehicle charging network, ubitricity, for an undisclosed amount.
The deal for the company that has over 2,700 on-street charge points in the country is expected to be completed late this year.
Electric vehicle sales are set to continue to soar in 2021, industry analysts and car distributors have said, as more models are brought to the market and governments push for use of cleaner energy to achieve climate goals.

Shell Energy posts £32m loss as ‘unsustainable pricing’ draws customers away
Shell Energy has posted an almost £32 million loss for 2019, pointing to falling customer numbers as competition in the sector remains strong.
In the company’s financial results for the year ended 31 December 2019, the company’s loss before tax sits at £31,538,000, a dramatic increase from £20,994,000 the year previously.
Operating loss also grew, hitting £26,765,000 in 2019 compared to £20,302,000 in 2018 driven principally by “adverse market conditions” the company noted. No dividends were paid in 2019 compared to £5,000,000 in 2018.
Shell Energy losses rise as customers seek cheaper deals
Shell Energy Retail, which was rebranded from First Utility in March last year, blamed a “very difficult competitive environment”, in which it said that many companies were offering unsustainably cheap prices. He said that 26 suppliers had left the market in recent years, leaving behind £300 million in unpaid debts.
